With its its distinctive arch-shaped, enamelled metal shade, lightness of form and unique, timeless design, the elegant Semi lamp achieved great success in the 1980's and became, at that time, the best-selling Danish design, gaining worldwide recognition and iconic status The Semi lamp was designed in 1968 as a product of the creative partnership between two architecture students, Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup. Reacting against the 'cosy era' that was dominating Denmark at the time, Bonderup and Thorup wanted to create a lamp that incorporated sharp, clean lines and a geometric shape. Their design was submitted for a competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and won first prize.

Semi Pendant Sm1 - Matte Black

The Fleurish Minor Chandelier is a modern, organic mobile-style lighting fixture designed by Michele Varian and built in our NYC studio. It is solid brass construction with glass and crystal accents, mimicking flora from Japanese imagery.
The fixture is kinetic and moves like a mobile or a plant blowing in the wind. Inspired by organic occurrences in flora – honeysuckles, stamen, water lilies, thorns, knobby branches, and the grotesquely pretty twisted-ness of an olive tree trunk—the elements of the three-tier chandelier engage every plane of vision. The solid brass armature individually connects to its fellow tiers with another solid brass rod through swivel hooks, allowing for rotation of each arm, separately.
Arm lengths are customizable, though connective rod placement and ornamentation is set to ensure consistency of balance. Each individual ornament is hand-constructed and hangs like a ripe fruit, or bursts off of the light like a plume of seeds disseminating into the air. The designs include glass crystal 'droplets', cocoon-like brass orbs, solid brass 'thorns', tiered miniature sculptures, and curled brass 'stamens'. Each functions as both counterweight and contributor to its artful, refractive presentation.

Poul Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 in response to constant changes to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs by bulb manufacturers. At the introduction of the PH 5, Poul Henningsen wrote the following: "After 33 years of basically Christian behaviour I have converted to Islam in my relationship to the manufacture of incandescent bulbs. For a generation I have believed that consideration for the consumer and common sense would prevail, but now I have become a fatalist. I have accepted fate, and with Louis Poulsen´s permission I have designed a PH fixture which can be used with any kind of light source, Christmas lights and 100 W metal-filament bulbs. Although a fluorescent tube would be too much to ask in the existing form!". The PH 5 was introduced as a classic new product, and no one knew at the time that it would eventually become synonymous with the PH light. Irrespective of how the light is installed or the light source used, the PH 5 is and remains completely glare-free. The fixture was christened PH 5 due to the 50 cm diameter of the main shade. Poul Henningsen wanted to improve the colour reproduction characteristics of the light source in the PH 5. Small red and blue shades were therefore inserted to supplement the colour in the part of the spectrum where the eye is least sensitive – the red and blue areas – thereby subduing the light in the middle yellow-green region where the eye is most sensitive. The light fixture's design has been regularly updated as light sources have developed. The PH 5 is available in the classic white version, a modern white model and in six colour versions, where the colour is darkest at the top and gradually lightens moving down from shade to shade. The struts are purple on the ‘classic’ model and bronze-coloured on the other seven versions. The reflector ring colour contrasts with the other hues. To celebrate the 60th anniversary in 2018 of this beloved pendant, Louis Poulsen released the PH 5 in an edition that pairs copper shades and white tiers – and in 2019 with brass shades. The new metallic-and-white combination highlights Henningsen’s shade system design and adds new dynamism to one of his most recognised forms, with the mirror-like metal tiers reflecting their surroundings. The metal shades a untreated and will patinate over time. All of these editions are also available in the scaled down PH 5 Mini (30cm diameter), which was added to the PH 5 family in 2017.

Poul Henningsen designed his first lights back in 1925/1926 for an exhibition in Paris. His work with Louis Poulsen continued right up until his death in 1967. Throughout his life, PH sought to create glare-free lighting; aiming to direct light where it was most needed, and creating soft shadows while using incandescent bulbs as a light source. Poul Henningsen designed Snowball in 1958 and it was exhibited together with PH 5 at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art. However, Snowball received no particular attention on this occasion, and was only re-launched and manufactured from 1983.
