Curator's Notes

I like this figurine because it’s miniature. I also like how it's a collectible (pairing nicely with Figurine of Woman with Rain Hat), but not in a tchotchke kind of way since it’s quite elegant in all white. I also love the cloud motif for it’s whimsical meaning and the ability of the cloud to be removed. Although the figurine is small, it makes a statement by drawing you in with all its intricate, playful elements.

Curator's Notes

Of all the pieces involved in traditional tea ceremony, the chawan plays the principal role. Tea Master and ceramicist Masanobu Ando pays tribute to this sacred object with this sculpture, which both is and is not a chawan. Rather, it represents the space held by a chawan - the void itself.  Individual coils of clay varying in shape and size all converge in the powerful form of a single object. The sculpture trancends established concepts of beauty or ugliness and meditating on its form is calming, like having a cup of tea. A stunning accent and interesting object to display on your shelf.

This is such a great figurine as are all the characters Yuki Nishio creates. Their playful compositions remind me of the cats in Japanese literature like the books by Haruki Murakami. A small pop of colour on the figure's pants bring so much joy! If you're feeling red pants, this one's your girl!

The “Faith” sculpture takes its inspiration from the Khor Virap monastery which is the symbolic birthplace of Christianity in Armenia. It was at Khor Virap (Armenian for “deep dungeon”) where the man who would become Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a pit for 14 years before he helped turn Armenia into the first Christian nation. Before attaining sainthood, Grigor Lusavorich was held in the bottom of a pit, where he was secretly fed by a local Christian woman who kept him alive. Later, after curing King Trdat III of a disease, he became the religious mentor of the monarch. During this time, Grigor would be instrumental in converting the king to Christianity. In 301 AD, King Trdat III proclaimed Christianity as the state religion of Armenia – marking the first nation to adopt Christianity officially. “I first visited Khor Virap as a teenager over 40 years ago. The feeling I got while climbing through a small hole and descending into the dungeon where St. Gregory was thrown to die is something that I will never forget. The idea that a man could survive in those conditions for so many years was astonishing to me and is a testament to the depth of his Christian faith.”
