The sculptural works of Aleph Geddis live at the intersection of traditional methods and modernist forms, informed by a lifetime fascination with the foundational structures of our world. Growing up on Orcas Island in the Pacific Northwest, Aleph spent many hours with his stepfather, a sculptor, carver and builder of wooden boats. Steeped in this rich environment, his early works drew inspiration from the stylized naturalism of Northwest coast Native carvings, and later, from all he saw on a family trip to Japan.
As his work evolves, there remains a consistent engagement with the simple elegance of natural forms. His recent works are traveling directly into the integral shapes of the Platonic solids, which Aleph experiences as holding a truth beyond human subjectivity, and a magical existence that precedes us and will outlast us, that we get the pleasure of experiencing and interacting with.

Limousine by Kay Bojesen. Kay Bojesen was ahead of his time when he began to produce modern and timeless toy cars in the 1930s and 1940s. He designed the beautiful limousine in collaboration with Ole Wanscher and, just like with the sleek, streamlined cars of its time, you can open up the roof. Lift off the roof, and convert the toy car into a dashing cabriolet or an exclusive limousine. Kay Bojesen was far ahead of his time with his wooden cars and, especially, the tight, innovative design that is the hallmark of the limousine, which he developed in collaboration with Ole Wanscher.

Superb wooden sentry box for Kay Bojesen’s magnificent Royal Guardsmen. The sentry box stands 36 cm tall and is a scaled-down replica from original drawings of Danish military sentry boxes. The Royal Danish Life Guards have guarded palaces and castles in Denmark since 1658, and Kay Bojesen designed his classic Royal Guardsmen in 1942. Kay Bojesen’s many figures are popular with children and adults alike, and this one is no exception. The hippo was originally designed in 1955 to look after the designer’s pencil on his desk, and this updated version keeps up the tradition! The hippo is made of beech, painted with blackboard paint, so you can write messages, little notes or use it as a desktop checklist. To make it easier to write on, this hippo is approximately 2 cm taller and wider than the one currently in the range. The white chalk is provided in the box. A Kay Bojesen classic that will accompany its owner throughout life’s journey.

Olufemi Sculpture Mud

Kay Bojesen designed these two happy skiers towards the end of the 1940s. The happy girl skier with the red cheeks and big smile is called Datti, which was the pet-name of Kay Bojesen’s daughter-in-law Ruth (married to Otto). The name of the male skier, Boje, was the pet-name of Bojesen’s son Otto. The original wooden figures are very rare, as they were only produced in small series. With their cheerful expressions, this pair of skiers always make people smile, and they are all set to conquer Danish living rooms and homes again in this relaunch. Both skiers are made of painted beech in the same way as the Royal Guardsman. The skiers stand 6.1" tall.

Curator's Notes

This is such a great figurine as are all the characters Yuki Nishio creates. Their playful compositions remind me of the cats in Japanese literature like the books by Haruki Murakami. The two fresh-faced skiers were designed by Kay Bojesen towards the end of the 1940s. This happy boy skier with the red bobble hat and checked jacket is named Boje, which was the pet-name of Kay Bojesen’s son, Otto. The boy skier’s female companion is named after Otto’s wife Ruth, whose pet-name was Datti. These two dauntless figures were only produced in small series, so the original wooden ones are very rare. Postman Einar was designed by Kay Bojesen, who first drew the cute postman figure in the 1940s. Postman Einar was produced to mark the 800th anniversary of Copenhagen, and the figure is crafted in painted beech with authentic details such as the postman’s hat and, not least, the postman’s bag with a little “letter" inside it. Postman Einar stands 8 inches tall, and he comes in an attractive gift box.

The famous, much-loved Danish designer Kay Bojesen drew this popular Santa Claus in 1948, but poor Santa was on his own without Mrs Claus for many years.
