Curator's Notes

The classic shape and Kuro-Mura casted surface on these trays gives them an antique appearance. This traditional method of casting mixes pigments with Japanese lacquer (Urushi) giving a unique texture and sophisticated appearance. Their weight feels substantial and appropriate for daily use while the slow oxidization of the brass makes its coloration and texture look richer over many years of usage.

Called "zaru" trays in Japanese, these traditional pieces are used to serve cold soba, as the bamboo mat acts as a strainer to prevent the noodles from becoming soggy. This soba noodle tray is made from durable bamboo by the skilled craftsman of Kohchosai Kosuga . The light golden color of the wood provides a pleasant backdrop for the earthy color of soba noodles, and excess water drains into the basin to keep your noodles fresh. Cold soba is the perfect dish to serve during hot summer days, but this tray can also be used to serve vegetables and fruit!

Curator's Notes

These trays are so beautiful in person! In Western culture lacquerware isn't as prevalent as in Japan where lacquereware is well-admired for the skill required to make such items. These wooden Makiji trays are particularly special because they are finished with a very durable lacquer that incorporates diatomaceous earth into it's base layer and top coat. These features make the tray extremely strong and scratch resistant. More than anything, we are in love with the deep red tone. Everything looks good displayed on a Makiji tray!

We love wood surfaces as an attractive way to display or serve, and it was a great pleasure to work with Makoto Koizumi to create our own version of something we use every day. It’s remarkable how much work lies behind an end product that’s so minimal. With the use of traditional hand tools, each tray is carved from a single piece of wood carefully selected by Makoto Koizumi for grain pattern, resulting in a continuous form with softly rimmed edges and a shallow concavity. We wanted something that looked fresh and new, but with an appeal that wouldn’t expire. We feel that this tray holds the essence of Koizumi-san's ethos – a beautiful fixture of everyday life with its own whimsical character. Holding the tray in my hands, I admire how the grain moves across the wooden surface like ripples in a pool of water, and I’m reminded of an old Japanese proverb that Koizumi-san himself passed on to us: “Spare no trouble on anything you do, and put your whole heart into everything.”

The flat expanse of surface on this circular tray showcases Takayoshi's signature brush-stroke textures with minimal distraction.
