Marcel Breuer's Wassily Chair (1925) is one of the most famous products of the Bauhaus School. It is a club armchair with all the stuffing taken out, leaving behind a skeletal framework and stretched seat, back, and arms.
Marcel Breuer is considered one of the fathers of Modernism. During his career, he was an architect, teacher, and furniture designer. Breuer is famous for a number of furniture designs, though perhaps no chair design is more famous than his Wassily Chair. Marcel Breuer designed the No. B3 chair, commonly known as the Wassily Chair, in 1925 for Wassily Kandinsky's residence at the Dessau Bauhaus. Eventually, the chair took the name "Wassily" from its intended recipient. The Wassily Chair was later produced in collaboration with Karl Koerner, who was the head smith at the Junkerswerken in Dessau. Over the next four years, the chair went through a transformation while Marcel Breuer was employed by Standard-Mobel. The Wassily Chair was again redesigned for Thonet, after his resignation from Standard-Mobel, and would remain the permanent design for Marcel Breuer's revolutionary chair.

The outermost layer, a rigid shell, is merged with an inner shell constructed of a natural fiber composite material, which is then fully upholstered. When you look at the graceful shapes and sensual curves of Finn Juhl"s work, you may be shocked to realize that he designed these pieces 60 to 70 years ago. A pioneering force in his own country, Finn Juhl is also credited, along with fellow Danes Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Borge Mogensen and Poul Kjaerholm, with introducing Danish modern to midcentury America. Although he initially wanted to become an art historian, his father persuaded him to attend the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture. By 1934, he had a prestigious position with architect Vilhelm Lauritzen and was exploring the functionalism movement by creating clean, geometrical buildings like the broadcasting house Radiohuset, a pinnacle of Danish architecture that now houses the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Juhl considered himself an architect of the interior as well as the exterior. He began designing furniture like the Poet Sofa (1941) for use in his own home, located north of Copenhagen. Juhl felt that furniture, handicraft and art should create a completeness of the house, which in his case was decorated with works by the Danish painters of the time. Today, the Finn Juhl House" an early example of open-plan design with views to its garden from every room" is part of the Ordrupgaard Museum. In 1937, Juhl began collaborating with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, and the pair was the buzz of the 1945 Cabinetmakers" Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. One such item was the Model 45 Armchair (1945), which broke from tradition by freeing the upholstered areas from the wood frame. At age 39, Juhl made his U.S. debut in 1951 at the Good Design exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York, and he represented Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters. A few years later, SAS asked Juhl to redesign the interior of its air terminals in Europe and Asia. Finn Juhl is still winning awards decades after his death: The Wallpaper Design Award 2010 was awarded to the Baker Sofa (1951) in the category of Best Reissue.

Hans Jorgensen Wegner, (April 2, 1914 - January 26, 2007), was a world renowned Danish furniture designer. His high quality and thoughtful work, along with a concerted effort from several of his manufacturers, contributed to the international popularity of mid-century Danish design. His style is often described as Organic Functionality, a modernist school with emphasis on functionality. This school of thought arose primarily in Scandinavian countries with contributions by Poul Henningsen, Alvar Aalto, and Arne Jacobsen. In his lifetime he designed over 500 different chairs, over 100 of which were put into mass production and many of which have become recognizable design icons. Wegner worked for some time for Arne Jacobsen, a successful Danish designer. Wegner was in charge of the furniture in the Aarhus Municipal Hall, which Jacobsen designed. After some years under Jacobsen, Wegner started his own company. Along with fellow architect Brge Mogensen, he designed furniture for FDB (a Danish chain of grocery stores), spearheaded by Erik Kold - who founded an organization of Danish furniture makers that launched Danish design abroad. In his later years Wegner became more attached to PP Mbler (which produces many of pieces originally designed for Johannes Hansen) and for whom he designed several chairs late in his life. He remained active throughout his life. An example of his later work is the "Hoop Chair", originally designed in 1965 with a steel tube base and finally put into production made entirely in wood in 1985 (for PP Mobler). Wegner retired from public life only in the last decade of his life.

Ib Kofod-Larsen was a popular Danish furniture designer known for his work created for G-Plan, a British company, and Faarup, a Danish company. Born in 1921, his distinctive designs feature comfortable materials and simplistic lines, with circular seats and pointed legs. Kofod-Larsen's work became increasingly sought-after during the 1950s and 1960s, typically featuring organic and minimal pieces made specifically for the Swedish market. He continued to design storage and furniture items in Sweden throughout the 1960s, and died in 2003.

Jules Chair - Stonewash Print Ecru

Duet is named for the two flowing lines of timber that form the overall shape of the chair. Originally created as a variation on the classic Thonet bent-wood tradition, the Duet Chair is actually made from a series of carved wood components, revealing a stunning composition of grain patterns. Duet Chair With Upholstered Seat

Designed in 1930 by Frits Henningsen, the Heritage Chair, only ever produced in limited quantity, is now being relaunched by Carl Hansen & Son. Seeking to develop a contemporary armchair with a high level of detail and quality, the Heritage Chair's warm and elegant lines bear testimony to Frits Henningsen's constant pursuit of perfection. The relaunch also demonstrates that his furniture pieces are as relevant today as ever. It has a radiance rarely found in modern furniture.

With a love for natural materials, Frits Henningsen created a chair that is inviting and evokes tranquility, fulfilling the eternal human quest for breathing space in a hectic daily life. It takes a skilled upholsterer about 12 hours to fit and upholster the Heritage Chair.

A matching footrest/ottoman, FH420, can be added for extra comfort and is sold separately.

Please note that pricing is based on the Heritage Chair in an opening fabric and an oak frame with a soap finish. Pricing does not include the footstool, as the footstool is sold separately. Heritage Chair

The all-leather Cabot Chair by Gus* Modern features a tight seat and back, with architectural wood block feet and simple French seams, offering a comfortable, modern take on a traditional, masculine design.

The Cabot is available in three vintage leathers chosen for their unique grain characteristics that will age beautifully and develop a rich, natural patina over time. Gus Modern's leather hides are carefully selected for their raw, natural surface characteristics that make each piece unique. The Cabot design is also available as a sofa.

Tight seat and back cushions are medium density polyurethane foam covered in a Dacron wrap. Includes plastic bumpers on all legs to prevent floor damage.

Chill spot. SAIC Quantam Rocking Chair was created exclusively for Design Collab. This CB2 collaborative brings together like-minded souls and design institutions. Design Collab No. 2 asked 12 students in the Designed Objects curriculum at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), "What does 'live well' mean in the context of home design?" Student Taeyoung Choi created an elegant and extraordinarily comfortable place to chill out and just relax. Using the science of ergonomics, Choi came up with a design that, "traces the shape of the human body and allows you to become totally immersed in the chair." Sculptural curved catalpa wood legs support cozy poly-blend upholstery in warm, modern charcoal grey. A welcoming spot for reading, watching tv or a little cat nap.
