Donald Knorr's 132U Chair was awarded first place by the Museum of Modern Art in the "International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design" in New York 1948. It was designed with the encouragement of his mentor, Eero Saarinen. The shell of the prototype presented at the competition was made with a heat bent plastic sheet.
