This Breuer bookcase represents one of the most anomalous designs in the designer's portfolio. The tubular steel is discontinuous and touches the ground with two molded ends, cut and closed with a disk surmounting the section. Designed between 1930 and 1931, it was originally produced in Switzerland in 1930 and sold in Zurich and Basel in the modern furniture stores owned by Sigfried Gideon, Werner Moser, and Rudolf Graber. In 1933 it was included in the collection designed by Breuer for Wohnbedarf.
Some of the earliest pictures of Marcel Breuer’s bookshelf system come from the Lewin House in Berlin, Germany from 1930.  In the early designs, Breuer’s bookshelf systems had as many shelves as he felt were necessary for space.  One area of the Lewin House study had 9 shelves reaching all the way to the ceiling, where another wall had only 5 shelves going half way up the wall.  Each of the units was supported by tubular steel and lacquered wood.
