In 1860, Gebruder Thonet introduced a bentwood rocking chair that would take this piece from being something for the aristocracy to a chair of comfort for the middle class.  This marketing to the masses approach became the cornerstone of the company both through their first rocking chair and the A14 Bentwood Chair.  The A14 Bentwood Chair itself eventually attained the name “chair for mass consumption”.  Deviations from the A14 Bentwood Chair, such as the No. 20 Bentwood Chair, soon grew in popularity as well.
