During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Hans Wegner changed the face of furniture design when he earned the title “the Master of the Chair”. His tireless chair designs came from his creative passion for the pieces he created, over 500 styles in total. He led the way in developing chairs which focused on minimalist design, with perfectly streamlined, strong joints and a natural look. Wegner exquisitely played with curves and shapes to create simple yet stylized furniture.
A skilled cabinetmaker already, Wegner was in his 20’s when went to study in the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and, from there, his career as a forerunner in modern furniture design began. After working for several years with esteemed names such as Arne Jacobsen, Erik Møller and Johannes Hansen, Wegner began designing his own range of chairs in the 1940’s, inspired by the Chinese Ming Dynasty. In 1949, Wegner released the Wishbone Dining Chair as part of this range. When it was mass produced by Carl Hansen & Søn, the Wishbone Dining Chair, also known as the "Y" or the "CH-24",  became a huge success.
