Curator's Notes

Masanobu Ando built this chawan using the Japanese tatara technique, rejecting perfection and welcoming serendipity to give the piece its unique spirit. The primordial form has the warmth of human hands, and the metallic glaze transforms the ceramic into a mysterious new material. As I look into the depths of the bowl, its flecks of gold glitter look back at me like stars. As I turn the bowl between my hands and experience the infinite variation of shadow and light, I feel inspired to accept things as they are. Not perfect, but beautiful.

A chawan is traditionally used as a bowl for preparing and drinking tea, especially matcha

Chawans must be crafted to particular specifications – balance, weight, angle, curve, and the kodai , or foot, are all carefully considered

Gold overglaze will develop a natural patina over time

Hand wash only with mild soap and soft sponge

Dry with soft cloth after washing
