Curator's Notes

Oribe ware has a rich history in Japanese culture, dating back to the 16th century. It differs from Chinese Celadon due to its deep, rich color that is closer to hunter green or forest green than the pale sea foam of celadon. Within the natural variations of texture, wonderful scenes of nature emerge and dissolve - mountains and hills, lakes and streams… all existing within the mysterious green glaze of this Oribe bowl. This bowl is quite large and deep. It is ideal for serving salads but can also be used as an ikebana flower arranging vessel.

Oribe glaze features natural variations in texture, as the glaze is not applied with a brush, but with a pour-over technique
Oribe gets its name from the glaze that is used to give its wonderful deep green glaze of Oribe Azusa
Inspired by the Japanese mindset during the Momoyama period, where people found beauty in the shade changes caused by the flow of glaze, and envisioned the depth of the mountains and the sea calling them "scenery"
The color is due to the glaze containing copper-sulfate, which turns green upon oxidation firing, as the oxygen interacts with the glaze
Each piece will have slight variations in color/pattern
