Exquisitely engraved reversible Sweetheart 12k gold filled shell locket circa 1940's on a 14k gold filled elongated rolo chain. Hanging 18 inches with a 3 inch extension and finished with a freshwater pearl accent bead.  Heart: approximately 3/4" wide and 1 1/8 long.
Throughout the Civil War era extending through WWII, Sweetheart lockets became a popular keepsake gift given to wives, girlfriends, and fiancee's from their soldiers. These lockets held images of the soldiers while they were away. It was a way to ease the heartbreak of being away from their sweetheart, hence the name.
