The pea coat is an iconic outerwear staple that was originally worn by Dutch mariners who gave it its name from from the Dutch or West Frisian word “pijjekker” or “pijjakker,” in which “pij” referred to the coarse twilled blue cloth used, and “jakker” meant coat.
