"Icon" is an oft-overused term but Knitting Chair, reissued by Danish brand Menu, more than qualifies by any reckoning. First debuting at the 1951 Cabinetmakers' Guild Furniture Exhibition in Copenhagen alongside works by Wegner and Juhl, the leather upholstered chair was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and features distinctive seat-back cutouts for resting the elbows when knitting. "The chair demonstrates the universal appeal of clean, human design, created with a playful, thoughtful outlook," says Kornbek Engell-Hansen, Menu's design and brand director. Available as a limited-edition of 99, the sculptural chair with a gentle curve of the seat and tilted backrest is exquisitely handcrafted in stained and waxed solid oak with a Dakar aniline-leather seat. Each one is etched in the frame as a limited edition, with an accompanying signed letter of authenticity. Knitting Chair originally helped to assure Kofod-Larsen's reputation as a master of Danish modernism and now this once-in-a-lifetime reissue opens an exciting new chapter in its storied history.
