A computer-generated fold in a piece of cloth becomes a striking creased ceramic shade, in a range of color options resulting from recycling different enamels. On the interior, a choice of either bright white or warm gold enamel creates a glittering effect. Pleat Box is also an exciting and first-ever union between between Xavier Mañosa, a master ceramicist from Barcelona, and the Mashallah design studio in Berlin with the Marset brand. Xavier's detour as an industrial designer informs his bold shapes while Mashallah, the brainchild of Hande Ak ç ayli and Murat Ko ç yigit, is right at the intersection of art and technology.

And the Beat goes on-with the Beat Wide variation in British designer Tom Dixon's unique series of pendant lights. Originally conceived during a field trip to India with his Royal College of Art students, the shapes are based on traditional brass cooking pots and water vessels. Using the same time-honored techniques, the lamps are spun and hand-beaten by skilled craftsmen from Moradabad in Northern India. But the technology is pure 21st Century, utilizing an LED light source. Studio Nur takes its name for the German word for "simply" but Soround, like many of its designs, reveals highly original complexities behind the spare facade. A contemporary take on a coffee or side table, it features angled black metal legs and an imaginative choice of tabletops. Rome truly wasn't built in a day, growing from ancient pastoral settlements on the Tiber River to a center of Renaissance architecture. From the new-era artisans at Chisel & Mouse, this hand-cast, resin-plaster model centers on the richly historical area surrounding the river's central Z-shaped bend. Enclosed in a plexiglass frame, the sculptural tile can hang on a wall or be displayed on a desk or tabletop. Brit brothers Robert and Gavin Paisley painstakingly reproduce select cities and stand-alone buildings in resin plaster (free of toxic solvents) of a reassuring weight and cool smoothness, with fine details including window frames etched in metal. In their Sussex studio, the "Chisel" refers to traditional plaster-cast methods and the "Mouse" to the computer-aided design (CAD) technology and 3-D printing used to achieve the sculptural models.

Few designers can claim a more authentic British ethos in aesthetic, craftsmanship and culture than Margaret Howell, whose men's and womenswear strikes a timeless modernity. After applying her mark to Brit legacy brand, Ercol, Margaret teamed up with another heritage house (and, like Ercol, A+R fave), Anglepoise, a lighting resource that everyone in the UK favors—including the Queen. "I've lived with Anglepoise most of my life," Margaret recalls, "school homework under the light of an original black square-based Anglepoise, and later acquiring various colored styles designed in the 1960s and 1970s." Among her treasured Anglepoise lamps is one she rescued from a dumpster, Yellow Apex 90 that would inform the Ochre shade in her namesake capsule collection of Anglepoise's Type 75 lamp. Saxon Blue rounds out the options, harkening to the ceramics and sweaters found in one of her serene London shops.

For Oki Sato of Japanese firm Nendo and Italian designer Luca Nichetto, collaborating on Isole Modular Seating was a study in virtual connectivity. An update on the tradition of Tanka, where one person starts a poem and a second completes it, they traded ideas via iPhone. "I sent Luca rough sketches...of soft shapes like pebbles or islands," says Oki. (Isole means "islands" in Italian.) "So I designed the armature as a bridge to connect the islands into individual seats," adds Luca, "and each seat into a modular sofa." A truly unique sofa concept, with the striking modular seating's cushions and optional armrests in molded CMHR foam and upholstered in stretch fabrics that suit both residential and contract interiors. Powder-coated steel base features low slim legs for a floating effect. To complement any configuration, the series also includes integrated round, square or rectangular side tables. Martin Kornbek Hansen, CEO of maker &Tradition, sums it up nicely: "Their different perspectives came together as one vision, one entity."

Designer Simon Legald elevates an oft-overlooked timber in his striking Pine occasional tables.For me, the woods fiery growth rings and characteristic aroma represent Nordic soul and warmth, Simon says. Crafted from solid wood with its distinctive grain, the tables wide octangular base is counterbalanced by the rounded-edge tabletop with its narrow frame. Use the larger version as a coffee table or combine it with the smaller table to tuck in underneath.

Description

Portability is at the heart of designer Tim Rundle's inspired LED lighting for Copenhagen's Menu and this versatile pendant takes the idea and runs with it. First, TR's beautiful opal glass globe dispels the idea of a light bulb as something to be hidden. And the fully dimmable bulb's inner structure is engineered in aluminum to draw heat away from the LED and maintain an optimum temperature and assure longevity. Second, the TR series is designed to be screwed into existing ceiling pendant sockets, permanently mounted and hard-wired or even simply hung from a hook with its cord plugged into a wall outlet to suit modern urban nomads.

Description

Wire delivers on a truly twisted idea for statement-making lighting from London's Studio Trevelyan for British brand Decode. Intricate yet appearing deceptively simple, the array of lines created by the shaped wire leaves the illusion of a twisted inner core at the center of the conical shade. That inner layer softens the light emanating from the lamp while the the outer wire structure defines its decorative form. In a range of singular powder-coated colors or with the added gleam of brass or copper plate.

Description

Frederik Kurzweg’s table lamp arose when the designer played around with cylinders of varied proportions. Tangent has a cleanly graphic shape with 2 steel tubes that meet at their tangential point of contact—the smaller housing the electrics while the larger functions as the lamp’s shade. The light source within is encased in an opal-glass diffuser that creates a soft light when turned on and the visual effect of yet a third cylinder when turned off.
