Regarded as a wellspring of the modernist movement, the Bauhaus Dessau designed by Walter Gropius in 1925 seems a natural for Chisel & Mouse's superb architectural model series. Shaping much of 20th-century design, the school exhibited forceful lines and the movement's characteristic logo. Brit brothers Robert and Gavin Paisley painstakingly reproduce the iconic design in resin plaster (free of toxic solvents) of a reassuring weight and cool smoothness, with fine details including window frames etched in metal. In their Sussex studio, the "Chisel" refers to traditional plaster-cast methods and the "Mouse" to the computer-aided design (CAD) technology and 3-D printing used to achieve the sculptural models. Conceived by Valencia’s Yonoh design studio, Kolos is first shaped in a plaster mold and then craftsmen fire the clay structure. As the Sled Base version shows, Finnish designer Mika Tolvanen's original Visu Chair for Muuto has become a template for an expansive line of iconic seating. And to the designer, that's as it should be: "I wanted Visu to have an unobtrusive and timeless nature that is familiar but never boring and without sacrificing function or ergonomics. Designing a family of chairs, visually related but for different functions, was an iterative and thorough process lasting nearly 2 years. In the end, I think every detail is exactly as it is supposed to be."
