The original Jockey Club, first introduced at New York’s Plaza Hotel in 1840, is considered to be America’s first “sport” cologne and quickly became the favored scent from Saratoga to Churchill Downs. A breezy, casual fragrance, it was exceptionally fresh and long-lasting, superbly carrying you through an energetic afternoon playing polo or sailing your yacht. Increasing in popularity with every passing year, future President John F. Kennedy discovered it more than a century after it launched and remained a lifelong fan.
Our 1980’s Gold Cap version was inspired by the classic original, but took a decidedly modern, creative spin with an infusion of more citrus and floral notes, and adding precious woods. A masculine citrus amber blend, it exuberantly opens with an effervescent cocktail of citrus zest and sparkling bergamot. Lush jasmine and aromatic geranium tempered with amber form an evocative heart, as ylang ylang, sandalwood and musk invite a warm, sensual drydown.

The original Tricorn formula launched at our New York City emporium in 1941 and sold out within weeks, quickly becoming a favorite of Cole Porter and the theatre and literary crowd. We are pleased to present our new edition, Tricorn Heritage, inspired by the classic original and reimagined by renowned perfumer Yves Cassar in a spectacular contemporary creation. A masculine vibrant citrus woody fragrance, it opens with a burst of golden citrus and fresh green notes. A true rose top note has little to do with those long-stemmed bouquets from the corner store. Rather, imagine the enchanting scent you encounter while strolling through a rose garden at summer’s peak. Lush, feminine, as light as a warm breeze.
Together with the master gardeners at the New York Botanical Garden and renowned perfumer Laurent Le Guernec, Caswell-Massey captured that fragrance directly from a Heritage rose in NYBG’s Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden. We blended it with a bergamot top note, a heart of black currant and fig, and an earthy base of vetiver with a trail of musk.

SUPERNATURAL NUMBER SIX EAU DE PARFUM

Working from the original handwritten recipe, we collaborated with famed perfumer Laurent Le Guernec to create a formula that is true to the original Number Six Fragrance, yet thoroughly modern. We chose floral and herbal distillations that would have been available in 1772 and blended them with natural, sustainably produced oils. And we updated the animal-derived ingredients (musk and ambergris) with cruelty-free plant-based components.
The result is a surprisingly contemporary fragrance that opens with smooth citrus and whispers of rose and clove, fortified with a strong amber influence. The dry-down is complex, with musk, myrrh, and a smooth balance of herbal notes. It’s a modern scent with a classic soul, worthy of the moniker “Supernatural.”

HISTORY OF THE SCENT : Originally formulated in 1772, Number Six is considered America’s first fragrance and the third oldest in continuous production. In 1780, America’s first president discovered it at our Newport apothecary, becoming a repeat customer and gifting it to several of his friends, including the French aristocrat and American Revolutionary War commander, Marquis de Lafayette. One of the compendiums in the Caswell-Massey archive notes, “our forefathers traveled by stagecoach with a flask of Number Six handy.”
