The wane edge bowl is a harmonious compromise between the shape and rustic rim of the bark bowl, and the durable clean edge of the round bowls. No two bowls are exactly alike in spaulting colour patterns or natural rim. The dramatic “finger spaulting” patterns found in our bowls are a unique characteristic of red maple, which is rare, but fortunately prevalent in this area of Eastern Ontario. Choosing the right wood is so essential to the art we create, and this is highlighted in our Ambrosia maple pieces.
“Low volume” Wane Edge bowls are shallower than the average bowl of their size and shape due to the natural curvature of the tree causing a lower side rim and more oval shape. Their lower volume consequently provides for 1 or 2 less servings.

The round ambrosia maple is the closest to the traditional “salad bowl” that people picture when thinking of wood bowls, yet is enhanced through the natural beauty of the ambrosia maple. Designer Faye Toogood’s addition to her range of ceramic designs for 1882 Ltd. puts a fresh spin on the forms and traditions of English creamware. Indigo Rain adds a touch of contemporary flair to the homely familiarity of blue-and-white striped crockery. The fine earthenware showcases the classic tones of English Delftware: cream offset with a rich, deep blue. Broad bands of indigo glaze – like painterly washes of watercolour – are applied to rough canvas and then transferred directly to the pieces… The characteristic fabric grain lends the ceramics an instantly urban look suggesting dark-dyed denim. With subtly different stripes for every plate, bowl and cup, each piece is reassuringly unique.

1882 Ltd. Indigo Rain - Medium Serving Bowl

These were born out of a broken bowl, smashed into “shards” on the floor. The resulting pieces were the inspiration for this shape, so not only do we have a rescued bowl, we have an interesting new form to work with. The shards are an edgier take on the traditional round, combining the durability and clean lines with a modern aesthetic.
