Albert Fouquet, the creator of the Eight & Bob perfumes, was an aristocratic Parisian who produced perfumes exclusively for his own personal use and that of those nearest to him. Each perfume was born from a memory of a place or of a person whose exclusivity and distinctiveness Albert Fouquet wished to transform into extraordinary fragrances to conserve them in time.

On this occasion Fouquet wanted to satisfy the request of his dear friends Alessandro and Chiara, an Italian couple who owned a villa in Provence where they went to relax and enjoy themselves, breathing in the freshness of the more than 1600 wild plants that flowered every year in the countryside of this beautiful region of France.
Every spring, Albert Fouquet went from Antibes on the French Riviera to the home of Alessandro and Chiara to share with them the splendid spectacle of colours and the wonderful aromas. During one of his trips, while decanting one of the wines he produced from his own grapes, Alessandro told Fouquet that his next diplomatic post would be in the far-away Philippines. He enjoyed carrying out his work travelling around the world, but during his long stays abroad he always remembered with melancholy the beauty of Provence.

Some months later, when Alessandro and Chiara were already settled in the Philippines, they were surprised by the best present they could receive from their good friend. Only an artist such as Albert Fouquet was capable of transforming into a perfume the freshness of the exuberant aromas brought forth by the plants growing in the Provence countryside. In the 30s skiing was a new-born sport reserved for a much reduced social elite. In those days St Moritz had already become the place to go for the European aristocracy and one of its habitual visitors was Albert Fouquet, creator of the Eight & Bob perfumes. He made interminable journeys there from Paris every winter.

Fouquet had been invited to the home of his friend Nicolas where he was looked after by a charming tailor who went from Megève to Paris every year to visit his best clients and to provide them with custom-made ski clothes for the season. While taking measurements there would be an engaging conversation in which the tailor and Nicolas recounted to Fouquet the delights of Megève. Fouquet already knew that the Baroness Maurice de Rothschild had recently decided to create a ski resort in Megève with more class and greater discretion than those in the Swiss Alps.
Some months later Albert Fouquet was encouraged to accept an invitation from Nicolas to a pre-Christmas dinner he would be hosting in Megève. These dinners organized by Nicolas, whether in Cap Ferrat, in Megève or in his Paris château, were well known and sought after among the high society. The secret of these one-off and memorable parties put on by Nicolas lay in the rigorous selection of their guests: intellectuals, diplomats, businessmen, elegant women, young artists, etc., all having a sufficient degree of vivacity and allure to guarantee a night of enjoyment. On his first day in Megève, having spent a strenuous time on the ski slopes, Fouquet began what was going to be the most magical night he had ever dreamed about. On entering his friend’s house, there was his host together with the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Nicolas did not delay in introducing him to Annicke, a young Austrian who was the daughter of a banker and a Hungarian noblewoman. Reflected in her face was perfection of feminine beauty. Her striking emerald green eyes and her constant smile radiated unparalleled serenity and tenderness. Her height and her deliberate gestures formed part of her natural elegance and her long, black dress set off with discreet jewelry was the epitome of excellent taste.

Albert Fouquet had the good fortune to spend the whole evening with Annicke. Hours of conversation beside the fireplace, laughter and dancing, led to a firm promise to meet again within the next few months. On his return to Paris, Fouquet wanted to hold on to his memories of that evening without forgetting any part of the magic of Megève: the smell of the mountain air and the wood burning in the fireplace, the ambience created by that select party. He knew that the best way of keeping them alive would be to transform all this into an exquisite aroma that only his extraordinary talent would be able to achieve. And so, a new creation of Albert Fouquet was born: NUIT DE MEGÈVE.

The Story Behind This Perfume

Albert Fouquet, the son of a Parisian aristocrat, was part of the elite French society in the early twentieth century and a perfume connoisseur. In a room on the upper floor of the family chateau, Fouquet created and perfected various essences for his own personal use aided by Philippe, the family butler. At social events he would surprise everyone with an exquisite fragrance that became increasingly in demand within the exclusive social circle he frequented. However, Fouquet continually rejected proposals to market his fragrance.

One night during his summer vacation in 1937 on the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur), Albert met and got on very well with a young American student who was touring France in a convertible: John F.K. Within minutes of being introduced, JFK was captivated by the essence that Albert wore. John’s charm and congeniality persuaded Albert to leave him a sample of his cologne with a note at the hotel the following morning:
"In this bottle, you will find the dash of French glamour that your American personality lacks."
On returning from his vacation, Albert received a letter from John in the U.S. thanking him for the kind gesture and informing him of the success his perfume was enjoying among his friends. He requested that Albert send him eight samples, “and if your production allows, another one for Bob”.

Without fully understanding the request, Albert decided to send a box with sufficient samples to offset the transport costs. His perfectionism extended not only to the fragrance but everything surrounding it. He didn’t fill the order until Philippe found some beautiful glass bottles in a Parisian pharmacy that Albert considered suitable for his cologne. Finally, he ordered several boxes decorated with the same pattern as the shirt that JFK was wearing when they met, and then labeled the bottles and boxes with John's amusing request: “EIGHT & BOB”.
Albert was surprised a few months later when he began receiving letters from America with requests from various Hollywood directors, producers, and actors such as Cary Grant and James Stewart. Everyone wanted the “EIGHT & BOB” cologne they had apparently discovered through John's father, who had maintained relationships with well-known stars because of his previous business ventures in the movie industry.

Albert was fascinated by ancient Egyptian culture and while visiting his friend in Egypt he could enjoy lengthy tours of the Great Pyramid of Giza, as well as the temples of Luxor and Hatshepsut. For Albert Fouquet, the visit was also an opportunity to travel to the birthplace of perfume. He wanted to research the essences that have been in use for thousands of years. He was also curious to discover what was in those extraordinarily aromatic jars offered to the gods to protect the pharaohs, or in the scents used to satisfy the revered Cleopatra.

This wonderful visit was enriched from the moment Albert passed through the doorway approaching Ahmed’s home. The impressive garden of his villa contained dozens of flowers that were unknown to Albert.

Albert was overwhelmed by new sensations and when he was unable to extend his already lengthy visit, he planned a second trip four months later with the express intention of finding a unique perfume.
After several weeks of intense work in the villa of Ahmed, Albert Fouquet selected the final details of a new formula after returning to his chateau in Paris. EGYPT became part of his exclusive and private perfume collection. It is such a pleasure for us to share the originality of the best perfumes created by Albert Fouquet and ensure they reach the hands of those fortunate enough to share his lifestyle.
