Chu-sen dyeing is a technique unique from the more common process of screen printing images and patterns onto the fabric that make Tenugui. While screen printing merely lays pigment on the surface of the fibers, Chu-sen dyeing seeps all the way through to permanently color the fabric. Ban Inoue uses a special kind of cotton fabric called Kaya. This beautiful cloth made of pure cotton fabric is formerly used as mosquito netting which is a specialty of Nara Prefecture. Mosquito netting fabric (kaya) has high absorbency and durability, and is easy to dry, making it the perfect base for these tableware textiles.
