Introducing our Simplified Tsuno Bukuro Bags. Casual and stylish, each tote has a unique character brought by the combinations of traditional fabrics from Japan. This modern-style Tsuno bag is simple and perfect for everyday use, whether it's carrying your essentials or grocery shopping.
These simplified Tsuno bags can be folded up and used as a compact reusable bag or, using a leather strap (sold separately), can be easily made into a purse.

Tsuno Bukuro means "horn bag". The name comes from the shape, which looks like two horns. Traditionally, these bags are simply constructed from a single rectangle length of fabric, creating them without extra cuts or folds. Tsunobukuro were usually used by farmers to transport grain. Each Tsuno bag is sewn in Portland and finished here in our studio.

Tsubaki 椿 is one of our most popular patterns, representing the camellia flower. The pattern became popular in the Edo era. As camellia begin blooming in the winter, it is a hopeful sign for the coming spring. Made here in Portland with US made brass zippers, high-quality leather, and lined with rail stripe canvas.

Dopp Kit, Indigo Tsubaki

Wind, wrap, sling, tie, decorate, layout. These colorful Chu-sen dyed handkerchiefs are useful and versatile. Made in Japan from lightweight cotton, they are handy to carry with you to use as a towel, napkin, scarf, headband, or accessory in your pocket.

Chu-sen dyeing is a technique unique from the more common process of screen printing images and patterns onto the fabric. While screen printing merely lays pigment on the surface of the fibers, Chu-sen dyeing seeps all the way through to permanently color the fabric. This is a light blue handkerchief that has a kingyo pattern combined with tachiwaku patterned boarders. Kingyo represent a fish that is said o bring good fortune.
Tachiwaku is the pattern resembling rising steam. In the Heian period, the pattern required advanced fabric making techniques. Therefore, it was exclusively used on clothes for the upper class. There are various kinds of combinations with other patterns Tachiwaku.

Kiriko Pencil Pouch, Indigo Kiku

Kuma means bear in Japanese. These specific Japanese black bears are also known as moon bears or " tsukinowaguma" because of their special crescent-like symbol on their chest. The bear is also a mascot here at Kiriko, representing the Pacific Northwest and old Japan. Patches are sew on, and non adhesive.
