Jack Whitten was one of the most important artists of his generation. His paintings range from figurative work addressing civil rights in the 1960s to groundbreaking experimentation with abstraction in the '70s, '80s and '90s to recent work memorializing black historical figures such as James Baldwin and W.E.B. Du Bois.
Whitten began carving wood in the 1960s in order to understand African sculpture, both aesthetically and in terms of his own identity as an African American, and continued developing this practice throughout his life. For the first time ever, these revelatory works are collected in Odyssey, accompanying a landmark exhibition coorganized by the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This monograph reproduces sculptures and works on paper completed over the last five years by Jasper Johns (born 1930), who in February 2011 became the first visual artist to receive a Presidential Medal of Honor since 1977. The sculptures, cast in bronze, aluminum and silver from wax originals, feature Johns’ signature number grid and the impressions of various objects and textures, such as choreographer Merce Cunningham’s foot. The recent works on paper include a series of drawings and prints based on three small works Johns made early in 2010 on Shrinky Dinks (a plastic made for children to draw on, which shrinks when heated). Dan Graham's artworks and critical writings have had an enormous influence on the course of contemporary art over the past quarter century. Working within the censorious dictatorship of 1970s and ’80s Brazil, Italian-born Anna Maria Maiolino (born 1942), who moved to Brazil in her late teens, has produced works steeped in defiant political energy. Maiolino was a colleague of artists such as Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, and later was affiliated to American conceptualism. Accordingly, she has embraced diverse mediums and genres, from clay and ink to video, installation and performance; also, she often incorporates aspects of Brazilian folk culture. Catherine de Zegher and Griselda Pollock have numbered among her champions.

Based upon the research of the Panza Collection Initiative, an ambitious, 10-year study project, Object Lessons focuses on four works by key figures of 1960s Minimalism and Conceptual art: Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris and Lawrence Weiner. Authors Francesca Esmay, Ted Mann and Jeffrey Weiss present each work from several vantages: an exhaustive chronological account conveys the surprisingly complicated history of the work’s realization, acquisition, ownership and display. An overview addresses the broad practical and conceptual implications of this information for the historical identity of the work and its consequences for the work’s future. A conservation narrative establishes the role of fabricators and the material and technical standards for the production of the object. Together, the authors explore how a previously unaddressed history of production, ownership and display has deeply influenced the life and legacy of the radical objects of Minimal art. A separate section, with contributions by Martha Buskirk and Virginia Rutledge, examines the topic of decommission, a new category of collection classification for works that are contested or compromised and are therefore no longer viable for display. Throughout, the book is copiously illustrated with photographs of the works, the exhibitions in which they appeared, and related drawings and proposals. Rounding out this volume are extensive excerpts of new interviews with artists and fabricators, key historical documents and previously unpublished correspondence.

Object Lessons: Case Studies In Minimal Art

This three-volume publication is a visual journey through 40 years of Nancy Rubins' sculptures and drawings. The first two volumes begin with Rubins' student work, where her themes, methods and ambitions emerge. The first volume moves through numerous large-scale sculptures incorporating massive quantities of used electric appliances with concrete and rebar, then on to trailers, hot water heaters, mattresses, airplane parts and small boats held in suspended tension by webs of cables. The second volume explores Rubins' often gigantic and sculptural drawings, densely covered with graphite pencil marks that embody the intense and abundant energy of their making. A final booklet with a series of playful and candid self-portrait photographs taken at the Baltimore train station photo booth in 1972–4 completes Work .

Garrett Bradley works across narrative, documentary, and experimental modes of filmmaking to address themes such as race, class, familial relationships, social justice, southern culture, and the history of film in the United States. Her collaborative and research-based approach to filmmaking is often inspired by the real-life stories of her subjects. For Bradley, this research takes multiple forms—deep dives into historical archives, in-depth dialogues prompted by Craigslist want-ads, or an extended engagement with the communities and individuals she seeks to represent—and results in works that combine both scripted and improvisatory scenes. Bradley’s films explore the space between fact and fiction, embracing modes of working and of representing history that blur the boundaries between traditional notions of narrative and documentary cinema. Her rigorous explorations of the social, economic, and racial politics of everyday life—its joys, pleasures, and pains—are lyrically and intimately rendered on screen. An attention to daily life and its often slow, unremarkable unfolding runs through Bradley’s films, from her earliest works, such as Dante 9-5 (2014), in which we follow a United States Postal Service delivery man along his designated route, to her most recent films, America and AKA (both 2019).
In America, a multi-channel video installation, Bradley constructs a visual archive of early African American cinema. Inspired by a 2013 survey published by the Library of Congress proposing that 70 percent of silent films made between 1912 and 1929 have been lost, as well as the discovery and restoration of what is believed to be the earliest surviving film to feature a black cast ( Lime Kiln Club Field Day, 1913), America takes shape as a series of vignettes depicting the everyday, at times, quotidian lives of early-20th century African Americans. Shot in black and white, with a score by Trevor Mathison and Udit Duseja of the Black Audio Film Collective (1983-1998), Bradley’s film presupposes the existence of a body of cinema made by and for African Americans and since lost to history. Mixing found footage from Lime Kiln Club Field Day and newly shot performances by non-trained actors, America poignantly asks what it might mean to model a history of black visuality and representation that privileges depictions of pleasure over spectacles of pain.
Pleasure and joy—and their intersection within nuanced familial relationships— come further into focus in Bradley’s recent short-video, AKA. The first in a trilogy of films about relationships between women, in this case relationships between mothers and daughters born into inter-racial families or families of varying skin tones, AKA developed out of hours-long conversations between Bradley and her female protagonists. In this kaleidoscopic series of portraits, the artist points towards the multiplicity and intersectionality of identity, pushing against the binary of “either/or” and, instead, embracing the expansiveness of identity called forth by the work’s titular allusion to “also known as.” Equally of note is AKA ’s summoning of a long history of black sisterhood. The work’s title is also an acronym for Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first sorority established by African American college women in the United States.
