Los Angeles–based artist Samara Golden (born 1973) creates immersive installations that explore what she calls the sixth dimension, where a multitude of pasts, presents and futures exist concurrently. For The Flat Side of the Knife , curated by Mia Locks and organized by MoMA PS1, Golden presented her largest installation to date, filling the double height of MoMA PS1’s Duplex Gallery with staircases, beds, couches, lamps, musical instruments, video and sound. The Flat Side of the Knife combines physical spaces with illusory spaces that appear only in mirrors, akin to psychological and hallucinatory spaces in the mind. Her use of mirrors in conjunction with sculptural elements made from a silvery insulation board allows the illusion of space to expand in multiple directions. This catalog includes documentation of this exhibition alongside the artist’s major works to date.

Samara Golden: The Flat Side Of The Knife

In the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, Kwame Brathwaite used his photography to popularize the political slogan “Black Is Beautiful.” This monograph—the first ever dedicated to Brathwaite’s remarkable career—tells the story of a key, but under-recognized, figure of the second Harlem Renaissance.

Inspired by the writings of activist and black nationalist Marcus Garvey, Brathwaite, along with his older brother, Elombe Brath, founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) and the Grandassa Models (1962). AJASS was a collective of artists, playwrights, designers, and dancers; Grandassa Models was a modeling agency for black women, founded to challenge white beauty standards. From stunning studio portraits of the Grandassa Models to behind-the-scenes images of Harlem’s artistic community, including Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, and Miles Davis, this book offers a long-overdue exploration of Brathwaite’s life and work.

This volume catalogs Vija Celmins’ (born 1938) first new body of work since 2010, featuring paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures.
The Latvian-born, New York–based artist has been rendering nature imagery from black-and-white photographic sources since the 1960s, exploring the same subjects repeatedly in paintings, drawings and prints. Here, she focuses on two motifs she has employed for several decades: the ocean’s surface and the night sky. The imagery, however, is not her foremost concern: “The recognizable image is just one element to consider. The paintings seem more a record of my grappling with how to transform that image into a painting and make it alive.” This process can be seen in A Painting in Six Parts (1986–87/2012–16), a group of six oil paintings based on a photograph she took 50 years ago from a pier in Venice, California.

High Winds

ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives in collaboration with Artist Curated Projects (ACP) presents Stand Close, It’s Shorter Than You Think: A show on feminist rage, co-curated by Katherine Brewer Ball and RJ Messineo with work by boychild, RJ Messineo, MPA and Guadalupe Rosales. The exhibition explores the promises and pitfalls of thinking with rage as a meditation, an inspiration, a medium, and a process.
In the 1960′s and 1970′s the United States became keenly aware of itself as a domestically violent space—from the death of Martin Luther King Jr., to the Watts Riots, to the Vietnam War. This public awareness coincided with the increasing momentum of second wave feminism and other radical public protest movements. But as “militant” organizations like The Black Panthers articulated, this violence did not originate from the left, but was a reaction to larger social structures that, in their refusal of social services for example, were already enacting violence on the poor, women, and people of color. As Pamela Haag explains, feminism “questioned not whether, but how violence would happen, how the body would be (ab)used or subjectivity compromised.” If this violence against marginalized bodies is inevitable, what are the most powerful stances from which we might confront its wide unending reach?
Rage is both a re-action and an action. It is felt in response to unequal power-dynamics such as sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and racism and the accumulation of these insults over time, lifetimes, and generations. Examining the way rage shapes and is expressed in the work of contemporary queer and feminist artists, Stand Close brings together the products and the process of rage. The work in the show ranges from the more direct visual semiotics of unrest in the performance work of MPA and boychild, to abstract meditations on power and loss in the drawing and painting works of RJ Messineo and Guadalupe Rosales. boychild’s performances—which employ costume, disguise, and changeability— are archived in traces across the internet referencing the in-between forms of queer cultural production and nightlife. RJ Messineo’s body-sized abstract assembled paintings raise questions about authorship and legibility as they play on what it means to make a mark. MPA’s collection of documents from her performances and her installation in the archive propose experiments in direct action, in meditation, and in the speculative alterations of power and framing. Guadalupe Rosales’ photographs, sculptures and meticulous hand-drawn geometric shapes limn relationships between mourning and rage in the return home.

In the two related bodies of work that form this volume’s centerpiece, Zoe Leonard poses fundamental questions about the medium of photography and the nature of sight. In a series of large-scale installations sited in the United States and Europe, the artist has employed the principal of the camera obscura, pairing it with silver-gelatin photographs of the sun. The image in Leonard’s room-size camera obscuras is immersive and continuous, shifting constantly in response to the fleeting light of the outside world and unraveling in the surrounding space to come into its full vibrancy. Rachelle Rojany’s Yearsbooks is a series of artist books that reflect on the medieval illuminated manuscript, in particular, the devotional book of hours. Wedded to the high-school yearbook, a present-day record and commemoration of time, the Yearsbooks illuminate memory’s restlessness, porousness, and its relationship to self-understanding. The first in the series, at 81⁄2 x 11 inches and one-half inch thick, is a bound, yellow- spined collection of 76 favorite pictures faded to 10% opacity. Personal pictures of work, family and friends are interwoven with images culled from Rojany’s research, creating a dream-like narrative. What emerges over the pages is a loose impression of Rojany’s presence, like the lines of Sappho’s poetry discovered wrapped around an Egyptian mummy.
The Yearsbooks provide a new format for creating visual autobiography, full of jumped tracks, crossed synapses, memory and fantasy. Readers are encouraged to use the book as a notebook, writing and sketching on top of its faded pages. Like a computer’s desktop image, those pages become a backdrop to the reader’s working memory. Rojany’s self-portrait recedes underthe jotted notes and sketches of the reader, entangling authorship, background, and foreground.
Informed by the river of ever-present time in Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha, the Yearsbooks address the permeability of self and the impossibility of seizing time. It is a prayer for interwoven existence inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh’s conception of “inter-being,” simply that all of the material world is interconnected.

Sinister Wisdom 110: Dump Trump features serious, satirical, and humorous writing in varied genres and forms, e.g., email correspondence, essay, poetry, short fiction, blog entries, novel excerpt, and interview—all reflecting lesbian ideas, notions, and actions of/for what it will take to unseat the Trump regime.
This issue of Sinister Wisdom emphasizes the ways in which struggle is a lifelong vision and commitment to realizing a better world, even if we argue that the Trump era represents a particularly urgent call to action. And to echo Morgan Gwenwald, lesbians have been doing this work a long time. As always, we include a range of lesbians/ queer voices of all races, ethnicities, ages, abilities, religions, and gender identities. We explore what Trump politics has meant to us as lesbians/queers, document its chronology, reflect on historical resistance, and commemorate the power of lesbian/queer art and activism against a hostile state. Sinister Wisdom 109: Hot Spots explores the Southern spaces where lesbians gathered and organized during the past forty years. The ways that lesbians came together during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s were many and varied. There was no social media, no high-speed communication. Lesbians relied on the US Post Office, telephones, and face-to-face contact. Public advertising such as newspaper ads, flyers, and leaflets, had to be done carefully and discreetly. Learning about events of the past gives templates by which to formulate and support activism in the present and future. Oppression, restriction, discrimination, and disempowerment can take many forms, some more insidious than others, and activism can be especially difficult when one is a member of a despised minority that also is criminalized. Sometimes the most we can do is be ourselves and live the truth in our lives.
This issue of Sinister Wisdom , fourth in our series of special issues covering lesbian-feminist activism in the late twentieth-century South, focuses on lesbian gathering places and ways that lesbians created community while continuing activism.

Amy Sillman: The All-over

Dean Daderko speaks with Elaine Reichek about the art, life and legacy of Nicolas Moufarrege.
Nicolas Moufarrege (1947–1985) was an artist, art critic and curator who died of AIDS related complication at the age of thirty-six. During his lifetime, he was best known for being a critical champion of the East Village art scene. He was born in Egypt, lived in Beirut and Paris, before moving to New York. He molded a complex mixture of cultures into a distinct sensibility - his idiosyncratic embroidered works confirms that he deserves to be remembered for his art.
Dean Daderko is curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston who curated Nicolas Moufarrege's art into his 2008 Visual AIDS exhibition "Side X Side."
Elaine Reichek is a fiber-based artist based in New York City who was close friends with Nicolas Moufarrege during his lifetime.
