Bare bulbs first sought shelter in opaque glass globes in the 1920s. Clean in their form and practical in their even distribution of light, the structures became popular bearers of good task and ambient lighting. Classrooms, libraries, courthouses, banks and kitchens alike welcomed these hardworking pendants, also known as “schoolhouse lights.” As demand for the style grew, the original white, flared globe took on more geometric forms with fancier metal fittings. In the 20s and 30s, during the Art Deco period, one form in particular – an unexpected half-moon – became especially common.
Norm Architects’ take on the retro pendant reflects the designers’ focus on functional, simple, and timeless objects that leave nothing more to add or take away. Nelson was inspired by a set of silk-covered Swedish hanging lamps that he wanted to acquire for his office, but he found the price to be prohibitive. An ingenious and resourceful designer, he went on to create the first set of Bubble Lamps using a translucent white plastic spray. Nelson drew from elemental, organic shapes in making variations including sconces, table lamps and floor lamps.

Pendants include a brushed, nickel-plated steel ceiling plate measuring 5.25" and a 6-foot cord. Product is UL-listed. Bulb is not included.

The starting point for w171 alma is a circle of soft sine waves diffusing light. The shape is based on a rotated sine wave, where light and shadow create a readily recognisable character. The lamp doubles as a solitary, for example freely suspended above a table, and in a group in a larger room - where it can create a pattern of floating points of light, like a ceiling of lights. The light image of concentric circles can be varied depending on the choice of light source in the E27 socket. The soft and reduced shape creates a pleasant atmosphere and lends a sculptural feeling, even in daylight, when the satin matte finish and colour of the surface emerges. With its slim silhouette, w171 alma can be mounted directly onto the ceiling or wall, or suspended freely. This makes it easy to adjust the light to the requirement of the situation. The w171 alma lamp was originally developed for a brand new co-working facility project in Stockholm, called Alma. Tham & Videgård was entrusted with refurbishing the five floors, and with developing the light sources of the building together with Wästberg.

The Semi lamp was designed in 1968 as a product of the creative partnership between two architecture students, Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup. Reacting against the 'cosy era' that was dominating Denmark at the time, Bonderup and Thorup wanted to create a lamp that incorporated sharp, clean lines and a geometric shape. Their design was submitted for a competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and won first prize.
Semi is a unique pendant lamp, based on two quarter-circles put together, back-to-back.
