Diamond Chair clearly separates the different functions of the chair: the transparent wire shell is bent out of a quadratic lattice into an organically shaped diamond like a net frozen in space, and the base of round iron embraces it like a polished diamond. In chairs many functional problems have to be solved first, but basically chairs are also studies in space, form and metal. On close inspection it becomes clear that they are mostly made up of air. Space flows right through them.

In 1940, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen developed a chair with a novel plywood seat molded into a three-dimensional form for a competition sponsored by the New York Museum of Modern Art. However, it was not possible to produce the chair commercially, due to inadequate technical methods. It was seldom possible to press the plywood into a three-dimensional form without it breaking or splitting. During the following years, Charles and Ray Eames concentrated their efforts on developing a new method. The plywood chairs LCW (Lounge Chair Wood) are the result of this long-term experimentation.

The Wooden Dolls by Alexander Girard are a large family of wooden figures representing human and animal characters. Girard designed them in 1952 for his own use as decorative objects in his Santa Fe home. These originals, which are part of the Girard estate in the holdings of the Vitra Design Museum, served as models for the current re-editions. Precisely replicated down to the last detail, the many different Wooden Dolls are still fabricated and painted by hand today, just like the vintage pieces by Alexander Girard. And even if the differences between them are only very slight: each wooden figure is a unique, individual product, truly one of a kind.

Curator's Notes

This basket is particularly great for office spaces as it's easy to toss unwanted paper items into the large cutout hole but the small ledge around the rim does a good job of covering the waste just enough to keep it out of sight. It's also perfect for tossing other items into, not necessarily only waste, such as nice hand towels.
Trash containers are often hidden or an after-thought as a product, kept far away from public sight. We like the idea that a frequently neglected household item can also be beautiful and worthy of display.
