The Wooden Dolls by Alexander Girard are a large family of wooden figures representing human and animal characters. Girard designed them in 1952 for his own use as decorative objects in his Santa Fe home. These originals, which are part of the Girard estate in the holdings of the Vitra Design Museum, served as models for the current re-editions. Precisely replicated down to the last detail, the many different Wooden Dolls are still fabricated and painted by hand today, just like the vintage pieces by Alexander Girard. And even if the differences between them are only very slight: each wooden figure is a unique, individual product, truly one of a kind.

Curator's Notes

We never knew we wanted a bread tray this shape until we saw it in person and realized it’s the perfect compliment to crispy breads baked in a Pullman Loaf pan. The tray’s hand-carved irregular surface allows bread and other baked goods to cool at the perfect pace without getting soggy, and it looks beautiful to serve off of too! The high edges and lightweight wood make it easy to carry, especially on late summer nights when it gets a little too chilly to keep the party outside.

Elton John White Kokeshi Doll

For over two decades, the Vitra Design Museum has been making miniature replicas of milestones in furniture design from its collection. The Miniatures Collection encapsulates the entire history of industrial furniture design – moving from Historicism and Art Nouveau to the Bauhaus and New Objectivity, from Radical Design and Postmodernism all the way up to the present day. "La Chaise" consists of two paper-thin fiberglass shells glued to each other but separated by hard rubber discs; the intervening space was filled with polystyrene foam. Charles and Ray Eames left the plastic shell untreated. The base is made of five in part angled metal rods inserted into a cross-shaped wooden structure. The space left open between back and seat is not technically necessary, but instead purely a design element. The intention was to emphasize the chairs light weight visually by perforating the otherwise large volume of the shell.

Mies van der Rohe designed the German pavilion and corresponding furniture for the 1929 world's fair in Barcelona. Among other things, his pavilion served as the setting for the inaugural ceremony led by the Spanish royal couple, Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia. While Mies van der Rohe implemented his ideas of avant garde steel and glass architecture for the building design, he drew his inspiration for the furniture from historic models. Mies van der Rohe took as his starting point the ancient, scissors-shaped collapsible folding chair, already a symbol of power among Egyptian rulers. In keeping with the occasion, he adopted the representative qualities of the scissors chair, although he does without the folding function and interprets it afresh.
