The fabric to be sanforized is moistened by water and/or steam, this lubricates the fibres and reduces the inherent friction within the fabric. Once moist, the fabric enters the sanforization process proper. Here, an endless rubber belt is squeezed between a pressure roll and a rubber belt cylinder, it is here that the stretching of the elastic belt surface occurs. The more the rubber belt is squeezed, the more the surface is stretched. This point of squeezing is known as the pressure zone, or the nip point. The fabric is fed into the pressure zone and upon leaving it, the rubber belt recovers itself and the surface returns to its pre-squeezed (stretched) size carrying the fabric with it. The effect of this action is a shortening of the warp yarns, which packs the filling yarns (weft), closer together: at this moment, shrinkage occurs.

Fit Notes: Shop owner Tommy is wearing a 38 or medium. The last round of type 3's were tight. Be it a change in grading or extra room for a heavier denim, these jackets fit more true. Tommy tried on a large first, and instantly sized down to the medium. It fit easily over a flannel. You'll want to pay special attention to the measurements on this one just to make sure you don't go too big. If you want to button this all the way up regularly, you may just have to be okay with having a bit more room in the arms. Tommy could get it buttoned and it was very tight, but again it's one of those pieces you rarely button. We find we wear our type iii's open 99% of the time. Tommy is 5'10," 170lbs with a 40" chest.

About Barbour

The Barbour story began in 1894 in the Market Place in South Shields. Today the 5th generation family owned business remains in the read, with Barbour's headquarters located in Simonside, South Shields. Although it sources products from around the globe, Barbour's classic wax jackets are still manufactured by hand in the factory in Simonside and each year over 100,000 jackets are processed via the central, subsidiary and local customer service operations.
In 2004, Barbour began to work with Lord James Percy, in the design and marketing of its flagship shooting clothing range - the Northumberland range.
