Robert Dudley Best drew the first drafts of the lamp that would later become synonymous with his name when he studied to become an industrial designer in Paris and Dusseldorf. As the lamp was the first example of Bauhaus in the UK, strong arguments were needed before the lamp could be put into production. The lamp was produced by the manufacturing firm Best & Lloyd, founded by Best's family in 1840. After mention in the prominent architectural magazine, Architects' Journal, the architectural community opened its eyes to the lamp's potential. Curator's Notes

‘Kuro-Mura’ refers to the blackened version of Futagami ‘Ihada’ products. The black is achieved through a traditional method of applying a mixture of dark pigment and Japanese lacquer (urushi) onto the surface. The result is a saturated, textural colour.
Crafted entirely by hand at the renowned Futagami foundry in Takaoka city, these pendant shades hang gracefully with their unique geometric forms. The “Myojo” pendant has multidimensional faceted brass surfaces. Includes pendant shade and canopy cup only.

I am a Kuro-Mura Myojo Pendant Lamp. I’m always the center of attention because my multifaceted character lights up every room I walk into.

Curator's Notes

‘Kuro-Mura’ refers to the blackened version of Futagami ‘Ihada’ products. The black is achieved through a traditional method of applying a mixture of dark pigment and Japanese lacquer (urushi) onto the surface. The result is a saturated, textural colour.
Crafted entirely by hand at the renowned Futagami foundry in Takaoka city, these pendant shades hang gracefully with their unique geometric forms. The “Myojo” pendant has multidimensional faceted brass surfaces. Includes pendant shade and canopy cup only.
