This monograph reproduces sculptures and works on paper completed over the last five years by Jasper Johns (born 1930), who in February 2011 became the first visual artist to receive a Presidential Medal of Honor since 1977. The sculptures, cast in bronze, aluminum and silver from wax originals, feature Johns’ signature number grid and the impressions of various objects and textures, such as choreographer Merce Cunningham’s foot. The recent works on paper include a series of drawings and prints based on three small works Johns made early in 2010 on Shrinky Dinks (a plastic made for children to draw on, which shrinks when heated). Color plates are accompanied by a conversation between Johns and fellow artist Terry Winters, which takes Johns’ newest works as the starting point for a broader discussion of his artistic practice.

Four decades of multimedia exploits in race, art politics and subjectivity: a long-overdue survey on conceptual performance artist Lorraine O’Grady.
Conceptual performance artist Lorraine O'Grady burst into the contemporary art world in 1980 dressed in a gown made of 180 pairs of white gloves and wielding a chrysanthemum-studded whip. For the next three years, O’Grady documented her exploits as this incendiary fictional persona, visiting gallery openings and providing critiques of the racial politics at play in the New York art scene. The resulting series, Mlle Bourgeoise Noire, was merely the beginning of a long career of avant-garde work that would continue to build upon O’Grady’s conceptions of self and subjectivity as seen from the perspective of a Black woman artist. This survey of O’Grady’s work spans four decades of her career and features nearly all of her major projects, as well as Announcement, the opening series of a new performance piece seven years in the making. Contextualized by an extensive timeline with letters, journal entries and interviews, Both/And provides a long-overdue close examination of O’Grady’s artistic and intellectual ambitions. Before she became an artist at the age of 45, Lorraine O’Grady (born 1934) worked as an intelligence analyst for the United States government, a translator, and a rock music critic for the Village Voice and Rolling Stone. Dan Graham's artworks and critical writings have had an enormous influence on the course of contemporary art over the past quarter century. Rock My Religion collects eighteen of Graham's essays from all periods of his work, beginning with his essays on minimalist artists such as Dan Flavin and Donald Judd, continuing with his writings on punk rock and popular culture, and concluding with his more recent considerations of architecture, urban space, and power. Alternating with these theoretical essays are descriptions and documentations of Graham's own works and installations - projects that trace his explorations in conceptual art, video, photography, architecture, and public sculpture, showing the integral connections between Graham's criticism and his own artwork. Although as an artist Graham has been associated with minimalism, conceptual art, and postmodernism, his writing does not conform to the stylistic and theoretical constraints of any specific movement. With sources and topics ranging from Ronald Reagan to the Sex Pistols, from Michel Foucault to Dean Martin, Graham's eclectic investigations into the complex cultural relationships between art production and social reality are always strikingly original. What makes these writings particularly astonishing, though, is Graham's willingness to examine specific manifestations of popular culture  without regard to traditional qualitative judgments and without separating "high" or "low" culture from the processes of everyday life.

Working within the censorious dictatorship of 1970s and ’80s Brazil, Italian-born Anna Maria Maiolino (born 1942), who moved to Brazil in her late teens, has produced works steeped in defiant political energy. Maiolino was a colleague of artists such as Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, and later was affiliated to American conceptualism. Accordingly, she has embraced diverse mediums and genres, from clay and ink to video, installation and performance; also, she often incorporates aspects of Brazilian folk culture. Catherine de Zegher and Griselda Pollock have numbered among her champions.
Anna Maria Maiolino: O Amor Se Faz Revolucionário is the most substantial study of this important artist yet published. Featuring a die-cut cover and tipped-on cover image, it charts the rich variety of Maiolino’s work as it navigates a path through Brazilian art history and many of the major postwar movements, a path made decidedly personal through Maiolino’s experiences as a migrant, mother and global citizen.
