This is a clay teapot with a red earthen colour - a reminder of its original source of material from the rich terra of the Aichi Prefecture. It seems to exist in quiet peace embodying memories of all the teas it has brewed within a flat bottomed body. Its traditional wide opening now sought-after because of the skill required to craft it, is particularly beautiful for allowing us to watch tea leaves, and see how they open.

Hasami, Nagasaki is one of the foremost pottery districts in Japan. Porcelain was first made in the area almost 400 years ago, during the Edo Period, and was not only distributed all over Japan but also exported to Europe through the port of Nagasaki.

This piece is handmade from black clay, or barro negro, from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The black color is the result of a natural oxidation process, free of chemicals, lead, or glaze. The use of Oaxacan black clay to produce pottery dates back to Zapotec times, when it featured a matte grey finish. In the 1950's, a potter of Zapotec ancestry developed the beautiful patina seen today by burnishing the pottery before putting it in the kiln. This St. Frank piece has been fired at a high temperature, a technique used in the Oaxacan valley for centuries to reduce porousness and increase durability in Mezcal and water containers.
The dimensions are 3.5" W x 3" H x 3.5" D
This vase is hand-molded from black clay.
Please note that black clay is porous. While these types of vessels are commonly used to contain liquid in Mexico, they will sweat out the liquid and leave charming white rings around the black clay. Traditionally, they are set on the table with a cloth when used to serve liquid. If you wish to avoid condensation or color change, place a glass or plastic container within the vessel to hold water for flowers or plants, for example, or use them purely decoratively.
