Curator's Notes

These hand made porcelain pendant lamps break up space with soft warm light, bringing a sense of calm and harmony to its surroundings. We love the hazy rouge hued glow that porcelain naturally gives off along with the ridges and fine lines that quietly rest on these gentle forms created by ceramic artisan, Tobimatsu. The off-white surfaces, intentionally left unglazed to further the soft illumination effect, leaves a palpable paper-like impression on the senses.

The iconic three shade system of the PH series of lighting fixtures was created in 1925/1926 by Poul Henningsen for an exhibition in Paris. The designer was determined to produce glare free lighting that was directed where it was needed most while creating soft shadows. The three shade system creates an even distribution of light as each shade reduces the light equally due to their distance from the light source. This is the first lamp to have been created using the scientific model of the logarithmic spiral as a basis for light distribution. Phantom is a series of voluminous lamps made from a special semi-transparent resin material. The outlines of archetypical chandeliers have served as inspiration for the lamps’ dramatic silhouettes, which in the ivory veil achieve a soft iconic character.

The lamps are made from a steel skeleton, around which the elastic resin is sprayed in closely-spaced threads, as a silkworm forms its cocoon. Tightly wrapped, the lamp’s outline stands out like a mysterious echo of the original shape. The lamps emit an indirect, diffuse light that creates warm and atmospheric illumination.

An icon of mid-century modernism, originally designed for Gaudi's La Pedrera building in Barcelona.
In 1955, Barba Corsini renovated the loft space within Antonio Gaudi's famed "La Pedrera" building - transforming it from a storage facility into 13 beautifully-designed apartments. To complement the modernist architecture, Corsini custom-designed furniture for the space, including the now iconic Pedrera lamps and table. He leaned on Gaudi's architectural designs for inspiration - the base of the lamp inspired by the building's vaulted ceilings and the lamp shade referencing its chimneys.
Designer Joaquim Ruiz Millet, a protege of Corsini, later designed this lamp in collaboration with his mentor. The lamp is made from powder-coated, perforated metal and is produced in Denmark by Gubi - a Copenhagen-based purveyor of historic and contemporary designs. This is a certified authentic design, produced to the designers' original specifications.
