Description

Rules of stability and balance are turned on their head with this sculptural coffee table by Italian designer Luca Nichetto. Float is the result of Luca's exploration of metal leaf turner, which allows for circular volumes of various dimensions. The technology is typically used in aircraft components. The cone in Luca's table makes all the more impact colored in brights or grey and reflected, along with life surrounding it, in the polished aluminum steel base. This turns the piece into a sceneographic object, says Luca, as well as a functional piece for the living area. Luca is among the most prolific designers of the Italian New Wave (does this guy ever sleep?). Between studios in Venice and Stockholm, he realizes his highly technical, precise aesthetic in furnishings, textiles, lighting, interiors and other products, typically via collaborations with a wide swath of heritage and new design houses. Float is part of the "Jekyll & Hyde" collection by Paris-based design house La Chance, the new Paris-based design house emphasizing furniture, lighting and rugs with a "strong personality" made from "noble, durable and natural materials" and all in "European human-size facilities." The debut collection was based on the concept of one item, two moods (in this case, the wood or marble base). La Chance is also entrepreneur Jean-Baptiste Souletie and architect Louise Breguetbeen, who got together in life and work because of, well, la chance! The French duo have lived in India and China; designed offices in London and built homes in Haiti; and have lent their know-how to established luxury companies and start-ups firms. They launched La Chance at the 2012 Milan Salone at Tom Dixon's MOST, a 5-building design world in Milan's National Museum of Science and Technology. We zeroed in on their colorful exhibition inside the railway hall, and it was love at first sight.
