In 1917 Gerrit Rietveld designed the Red Blue Chair, sometimes referred to as the Mondrian Chair, which signaled a radical change in architectural theory. The Red and Blue Chair was originally constructed in a natural wood finish, but in 1921 Gerrit Rietveld began an association with the De Stijl movement that led to the distinctive painting of this revolutionary chair.
