Mies van der Rohe was born in 1886 in Aachen, Germany.  He was the son of stone carver where he worked as a youth.  Mies had an early interest in design and worked at various Aachen design firms before moving to Berlin to work with the interior designer Bruno Paul.  He worked with German designer Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, and French designer Le Corbusier in his 20s.  The influence of the early modernist designers would have a lasting impact on Mies throughout his long career.
Mies van der Rohe was responsible for some of the most enduring architectural and furniture designs of the 20th century.  Such structures as the German Pavilion and the Farnsworth House would have a lasting influence on architects that followed.  Furniture designs, such as the MR Series and Barcelona, still influence popular contemporary furniture designs.
