Oh weee. We were excited to see a new silhouette, at least to us, pop up on the radar. And this wabash/duck canvas vest is a stunner. The since back and wide arm opening is a refreshing shift from all-moto-all-the-time. Would you also believe that it's sulphur rope dyed so it's going to fade nicely to its natural core? It's a truly marvelous piece of art in the form of clothing. The bleach-dyed Wabash stripe gives it a touch of dressy while remaining a classic work vest you can kick from here to California and back.

Wabash looks like quite a formal fabric, but in fact it was commonly used for work wear from the early 1800s through to the early 1900s, very often as uniforms for the massive US railroads work force. Finding out a lot about Wabash is very difficult, but we believe there were 2 ways in which the dots were originally ‘applied’ to the base fabric: 1) the pattern would be applied as a block print to the undyed fabric with a starch based “resist” and then dyed, the dye not adhering to the resistant pattern; and 2) the fabric was dyed and then the pattern bleached into the fabric - this was done by applying a mildly acidic solution to the cloth via copper rollers with the pattern raised from the surface of the roller, a process known as discharge printing.

Perhaps the most famous of the American Wabash dying and printing companies was J.L. Stifel & sons set up in West Virginia in 1835. They called their product ‘Indigo Wabash Stripe’ and it was often characterized by an impressive assortment of dots, triangles and diamonds. A few examples of these can be found in ‘King of Vintage vol 3’ by Rin Tanaka.

Our latest Wabash fabric, designed from first principles by Haraki, is created utilizing the discharge printing technique. Both the weft and the warp are separately black sulphur rope dyed and then woven to create a 12oz denim fabric. This fabric is then discharge printed to create the dots. Because we use a rope dying technique for the base fabric, the garments created from it will age with great character. ">wabash face

Canvas differs from other heavy cotton fabrics, such as denim, in being plain weave rather than twill weave. Canvas comes in two basic types: plain and duck. The threads in duck canvas are more tightly woven.">cotton duck back

One washed, but expect a little more

The stretch that occurs can be eliminated when the friction within the fabric is reduced. This will happen during soaking and/or washing, where both water and soap act as lubricants. The lubricants, along with the mechanical action of the washer, help the fibres relax and contract (shrink) back to their original length.

One of the reasons that dry cleaning does not shrink natural fabrics is that the friction within the fabric is not reduced by dampening.">shrinkage

A variance of .5" is within tolerance.
Fit Notes: Shop owner Tommy stuck with his true Iron Heart size of a medium on this. For newcomers, we will stick with the same recommendation of sizing up one. Almost everyone does it, trust us. And if you don't, trust the measurement charts. They will tell you everything you need to know. Tommy is 5'10," 170lbs with a 40" chest.
