Gyokuro is the highest grade of Japanese green loose leaf tea - a shade grown sencha. The tea leaves are shielded from the sun for a few weeks before being harvested. This slow, deliberate shade growth increases the amino acid theanine and the alkaloid caffeine in the leaves and produces a very smooth flavour.
