January 1618, a Japanese galleon, the Pacific ocean.
Following a diplomatic mission to the West, a galleon carrying a delegation of samurai charges through dark ocean currents. Loaded with a rare and precious cargo, the ship’s hull is redolent of sweet-smelling tropical woods, heady Spanish leather, frankincense, fine black pepper and other exotic ground spices—the intoxicating spirit of a singular, extraordinary voyage of discovery.

- The precise time and place that NANBAN centers on is the last leg in the transoceanic voyage of a Japanese delegation returning home, after having spent seven years abroad visiting Europe, Mexico and lastly, the Phillipines. After failed negotiations with the West, Ambassador Hasekura Tsunenaga organized for the ship to be loaded in the Manila one more time before returning to Japan.

- The pitch black hull of the galleon carried exotic goods like European leather, fine oil paintings and carved woodwork, rich spices from South East Asia and silver, cacao and coffee from Mexico. It was the last commercial and diplomatic excursion to the West until the 19 th century. After this epic mission, Japan closed its borders to foreign influence, due to its mistrust of Catholic missionaries. Hasekura Tsunenaga’s journey represents a unique and almost forgotten moment in history, one never to be repeated.

- Nanban (南蛮, “southern barbarian”) is a Sino-Japanese word, originally referring to foreigners arriving to Japan from the south sea. In Japan, the word took on a new meaning when it came to designate the Portuguese and Spanish, who first arrived in 1543, and later other Europeans.  Today it’s used more as a historic designation, referring especially to 16 th and 17 th century art and decorative objects with a European influence.

- The fragrance of NANBAN represents a Japanese story outside of the traditional vision of the country. It’s not Japanese in style because it composed of ingredients from Europe, South East Asia and Mexico alien to Japanese culture, but that were brought into the country by the 17 th century delegation. A ‘foreign-style’ (i.e. Nanban style) fragrance representing an oriental view of the West, and vice-versa.

September 1877, Port of Marseille, France. In a bedroom in the City of Flesh, a Kashmiri shawl drapes decadently over the bed. Once extremely coveted, the shawls are now out of fashion with the bourgeois, their distinctive patchouli scent a victim of their downfall. Adopted by bohemians and courtesans, the fragrance mixes with French lavender, musky ambers and exotic balsams. With a new edge, and in the hands of misfits with style, the ‘undesirable’ becomes desired again.

- The scent of patchouli first reached Western noses with the Kashmir-style shawls fashionable in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The fine wool shawls would be packed with patchouli leaves in their folds to protect them from moths during their journey from India into Europe. Their distinctive scent became a mark of their artisanal quality and exotic origin
-The shawls would travel in caravans from India, arriving in Egypt and sailing to Marseille. Needless to say, they cost a fortune. By 1808, French and British manufacturers decided to get in on the trend, and started copying them. Their quality was good, but there was something missing: the scent of patchouli. French manufacturers then asked perfumers to create scents that could be added to the shawls, in order to make them pass as authentic
-No longer as exclusive, the popularity of these shawls with the elites declined in the 1870s, due to the reduction in price, the increase in availability, and also to a change in women's fashion: the addition of the bustle, meant that a shawl would no longer drape in the same manner. Patchouli was no longer the hottest scent in aristocratic circles... -The shawls then became fashionable amongst courtesans and prostitutes, who would wear them undressed or seductively draped over furniture. Becoming popular in fringe circles, the scent of patchouli, reminiscent of Orientalist fantasies of odalisques and evocative of earthy pleasures, became the scent of decadence, of ‘taste professionals’ of dubious reputation.
-Later on, in the 20 th century, hippies would re-appropriate patchouli for its connection to India, its association with European misfits, and for a potency that would mask cannabis. It became the olfactive signature of counter-culture.
-In order to create our formula, we set our story inside a courtesan's bedroom. Setting it in Marseille, the traditional port of entry for the shawls, gave us the lavender and rose waters used in the 19th century beauty regiment. Skin remedies with ingredients such as ambrette seed and tolu baslam were used for medicinal purposes to cure rashes and even venereal diseases. Those became important parts of the fragrance foundation. Interestingly, tonka bean was used in both perfumery and French desserts...a sweet base to round of earthly pleasures.

- In the Aztec language, a metaphor for poetry is “in Xochitl in Cuicatl” (Flor y Canto – Flower and Song), which exemplifies the importance of flora in Mexico. Xochitl, or “flower”, was used to refer to eloquent, elegant and well-used words.

- Two Aztec deities were closely associated with flora: Xochipili, the ‘Prince of Flowers’ was the god of summer. The exquisite body of his wife Xochiquetzal, was believed to be the source of all floral scents.

- The Aztec Gods received their offerings through fragrant smoke: White Copal, an aromatic tree resin used by Mesoamerican cultures as burned incense, acts as a cool, menthol backdrop to the rich floral scents.

- The velvety scent of Omixochitl or Mexican Tuberose is spiked by a warm-but-cold sweetness that was thought to attract benevolent spirits.

- Flowers and vegetables for the Mexico City market are still cultivated in Xochimilco, an area composed of floating gardens, known as chinampas, which dates from Aztec times.

- The Architects Club was inspired upon reading the story of Claridge’s renovation in the late 1920’s by two famous Art Deco architects, Oswald Milne and Basil Ionides. By 1930, it contained some of the city’s most brilliant Art Deco interiors.

- The perfume focuses on the contrast between the Victorian exterior and the new, sparkly interiors. As the renovation work finished, architects would gather for a drink and a smoke and admire the stylish design of velvet, leather panel walls, exotic woods and frosted glass panels. The sudden irruption of the city’s fashionable youth, with gin martinis, and vanilla cigarettes in hand, adds zing and freshness to the composition.

- Alexander Pushkin, the Great Russian author, was married to a great beauty named Natalie Gonchareva. Among her admirers was George d’Anthès, a young French officer. Their constant flirtation infuriated Pushkin and provoked the imminent duel. Wounded by d’Anthès, Pushkin perished two days later.
- Aleksandr takes you through the fateful day of the duel: from the gentleman’s toilette, through a sleigh-ride in the cold winter air and into the heady forests outside St. Petersburg…It travels, like a bullet in the air, from a cold shot of vodka to a warm fiery heart.

- Spanish princesses are known as Infantas; in the 17 th century, France’s political enemy was Spain. Marriage to a Spanish Infanta would reconfigure the balance of power in Europe, and eventually turn France into the hegemonic power.

- When Louis XIV first appeared in the room’s threshold, the French Queen Mother gestured to the door and asked the Infanta what she thought of the new arrival; the Infanta blushed and responded “ The door seems quite beautiful and strong…”

- The Suede accord in Infanta en flor hints at the Peau d’Espagne perfumed leather gloves in vogue at the time, while the rose and orange blossom notes evoke the heavily-scented rouge and pale powdered skin in of the Spanish delegation.

- The Architects Club was inspired upon reading the story of Claridge’s renovation in the late 1920’s by two famous Art Deco architects, Oswald Milne and Basil Ionides. By 1930, it contained some of the city’s most brilliant Art Deco interiors.

- The perfume focuses on the contrast between the Victorian exterior and the new, sparkly interiors. As the renovation work finished, architects would gather for a drink and a smoke and admire the stylish design of velvet, leather panel walls, exotic woods and frosted glass panels. The sudden irruption of the city’s fashionable youth, with gin martinis, and vanilla cigarettes in hand, adds zing and freshness to the composition.

- ÉL and Ella were inspired by the decadence and glamour of  Acapulco in the 70s. December in Acapulco was the obligatory stop in the jet set calendar, with lots of beach and pool time and endless partying. The 70s were an era of glamour and sensuality heightened in here by the heat, the magnificence of the bay and magical sunsets.

- With Él and Ella we were looking to create the impression of a scent macerating on skin, something more sensual and playful. The idea was to recreate the scent of HIM and HER just as they leave the disco, they come together and embrace…what would each smell like? HIM with his unbuttoned shirt and his burly scent, her with her plunging neckline and her voluptuous femininity. In ÉL and ELLA skin, sweat, cigarettes, champagne, sand and heat all come together under in a sophisticated way.

- DARK GALLEON focuses on the moment of disembarkation when the merchant galleon arrives in Nagasaki, the South Island port city where the Spanish and Portuguese had set up camp for trade with the Japanese.

The kitchen of the Royal Convent of Jesus Maria is a sacred space: Baroque carvings in cedar wood beams, thick stucco walls and earthenware pots that brew elaborate recipes. Among them, a hot cocoa formula rich enough to unleash rapture, a climax of the senses.

- Deep in the heart of Mexico City in 1695, a group of nuns gathers together in the kitchen to concoct a cherished recipe. Blending together rich chocolate and spices in earthenware pots, the Sisters brew a hot cocoa recipe that had become well known all over the Viceregal city.
- MEXICAN BAROQUE captures the scents that fill the kitchen, blending cocoa absolute, Mexican vanilla, and smoked chilies together with cedar wood and red clay.
- Modern Mexican food was born during the Baroque period. Within the many convent kitchens in the cities of New Spain, recipes combining Asian, European and Mexican ingredients, seasonings and techniques became a a true Baroque expression of feeling, emotion and opulence.
- The Royal Convent of Jesus Maria was founded in 1578 for the female descendants of the Spanish conquistadors. Wealthy and aristocratic, they turned the convent into their own secret world. There is an account from 1695 stating two gourmand recipes that were a specialty of the convent: A rich, spiced hot cocoa and a traditional Spanish bread pudding.

- NOCTURNAL GREEN (like our ÉL and ELLA) was inspired by the decadence and glamour of  Acapulco in the 70s. December in Acapulco was the obligatory stop in the jet set calendar, with lots of beach and pool time, and endless partying in tropical gardens.

- The idea behind NOCTURNAL GREEN was to recreate the night time scent of the garden outside of famous discotheque, Armando’s Le Club. Upon leaving the dance floor, you would exit onto the garden, where the thick, dewy grass would extend beyond the pool and into the beach.

- The aroma of the luxuriously green candle is reminiscent of tropical gardens, pools and beautiful beaches. The luscious scent of the curupita flower, combined with the fresh and invigorating notes of petrichor, dewy palm fronds and fresh cut grass, capture the essence of eternal summer.

Early Morning, October 1175, Calabria, Italy. The cool night air dissipates under the sun’s first rays. The ripe citrus in the field has absorbed all the water of the morning dew and the farmers are ready to work on the misty green fields, speckled by the bright yellow of the citron. They leave their woody cabin and take a deep breath…

- Continuing the storyline of L’Etrog, after the farmer’s repose in the warmth of their wooden cabin, L’Etrog Acqua opens up like the first rays of sun in a misty morning. The citron in the field has heavy droplets of water from the morning dew. The cool air carries the smell of distant myrtle, lavender and grass opening the farmers’ lungs with incredible freshness. The citron is cool and wet to the touch, the earth beneath is damp and green.

- Created by Rodrigo Flores-Roux, L’Etrog Acqua started as a personal ‘summer’ scent, evoking the open fields of citron rather than the sweet warmth of the woody cabin in L’Etrog. The original date accord of  L’Etrog, which procures a velvety dried fruit feeling is here replaced by extra freshness, an aromatic heart of lavender and myrtle and drier woods in the background. L’Etrog  Acqua is a thirst-quenching, juicy and very rich Mediterranean scent.

May 1899, Foyer of the Opéra-Comique, Paris During the Opera’s intermission, a group of seven young men gather at the Grand Foyer in search of new flirtations. Women of all sorts are lured in by the crisp, green scent of the men’s gardenia boutonni è res, enlivened with the bergamot and lavender colognes they wear. As they draw closer, the “Opera Flower” exudes its elegant masculinity, the last breath of a bloom sacrificed on a black-tie lapel.

- White flower boutonnières are generally preferred for Black-Tie because of their elegant contrast. Gardenias are top choice for men, as they delight women with their scent. During the Belle Époque, they became known as the “Opera flower”.
- In 1899, a man would select a fresh boutonnière in much the same way he would wear a freshly laundered shirt or a pair of polished shoes. Its glory lay in its fragility; it was picked, worn in the buttonhole and allowed to die.
- In the glory days of the Opéra-Comique, the Grand Foyer was one of the most exciting meeting points of the Parisian elite; champagne would flow with conversation, flirting and gossip.
- The existing Opéra-Comique was officially re-opened in December 1898. It saw the premieres of composers such as Massenet, Debussy, Puccini and Ravel. The beaux-art decoration of the Grand Foyer consists of frescoed walls, gilded woodwork and for the first time, electric chandeliers; the slightly smoky base of Boutonniere no.7 evokes the crowd gathered during intermission.

- In the Aztec language, a metaphor for poetry is “in Xochitl in Cuicatl” (Flor y Canto – Flower and Song), which exemplifies the importance of flora in Mexico. Xochitl, or “flower”, was used to refer to eloquent, elegant and well-used words.

- Two Aztec deities were closely associated with flora: Xochipili, the ‘Prince of Flowers’ was the god of summer. The exquisite body of his wife Xochiquetzal, was believed to be the source of all floral scents.

- The Aztec Gods received their offerings through fragrant smoke: White Copal, an aromatic tree resin used by Mesoamerican cultures as burned incense, acts as a cool, menthol backdrop to the rich floral scents.

- The velvety scent of Omixochitl or Mexican Tuberose is spiked by a warm-but-cold sweetness that was thought to attract benevolent spirits.

- Flowers and vegetables for the Mexico City market are still cultivated in Xochimilco, an area composed of floating gardens, known as chinampas, which dates from Aztec times.

September 1877, Port of Marseille, France. In a bedroom in the City of Flesh, a Kashmiri shawl drapes decadently over the bed. Once extremely coveted, the shawls are now out of fashion with the bourgeois, their distinctive patchouli scent a victim of their downfall. Adopted by bohemians and courtesans, the fragrance mixes with French lavender, musky ambers and exotic balsams. With a new edge, and in the hands of misfits with style, the ‘undesirable’ becomes desired again.

Misfit is centered on the idea of things to go in and out of fashion…of fads that go from the mainstream to the fringes of society, and from the outside back in. Of making the undesirable, desirable again. Instead of following a trend, being a misfit and reclaiming the elegance of patchouli in our own terms.

- The scent of patchouli first reached Western noses with the Kashmir-style shawls fashionable in the late 18th century and early 19 th The fine wool shawls would have patchouli leaves in its folds to protect them from moths and insects during their journey from Asia into Europe. The distinctive scent became a mark of their artisanal quality and origin.
- Around 1808, the first shawls of this kind were being produced in Paisley, Scotland. Shawls were also produced in other Scottish cities and in France. French manufacturers then asked perfumers to create a scent that could be added to the shawls, to make them pass as authentic.
- The popularity of these shawls with the elites declined in the 1870s, due partly to a reduction in price and increase in availability, and also to a change in women's fashion: the addition of the bustle, meaning that a shawl would no longer drape in the same manner. The Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) also prevented the export of shawls from Kashmir.
- The shawls then became fashionable amongst courtesans and prostitutes, who would wear them undressed or seductively draped over furniture. Becoming popular in fringe circles, the scent of patchouli, reminiscent of Orientalist fantasies of odalisques and evocative of earthy pleasures, became the scent of decadence, of ‘taste professionals’ of dubious reputation.
- Later on, in the 20 th century, hippies would re-appropriate patchouli for its connection to India, its association with European misfits, and for a potency that would mask cannabis. It became the olfactive signature of counter-culture.

- The story of the Calabrian Etrog citron illustrates the often overlooked part religion plays in transforming the landscape. While citrus is associated with areas of Mediterranean climate, it is practically a newcomer to the Mediterranean itself and was introduced there through what is today the least familiar member of the species – the citron or Citrus medica. This fruit was the first of its genus to be cultivated intensively in the Fertile Crescent of the ancient Near East. It owed its distribution into the Roman Mediterranean to the Greeks, Arabs and the Jews, for whom the citron had become an object essential for the celebration of Sukkot.

- During the First Crusade, Southern Italy fell to the Normans, which encouraged Calabrian Jews to engage in the agricultural trades. By the 12th century, the communities were thriving. Since then, the harvest of the Diamante Citron or Etrog has remained a regional tradition.

- There are religious interpretations that relate the Etrog to the Garden of Eden. The fragrance is said to be the “Fragrance of Heaven”, and the Etrog itself is associated with righteousness, goodness and desirability.

- The brisk character of Myrtle marries with leafy nuances emulating the freshly opened fronds of palm trees. An unexpected mouthwatering accent follows, with Smyrna Date fruit and elegant Cedar wood from Lebanon.

- The Limonaia was built between 1777 and 1778, after a design by Zanobi del Rosso in the location of the former Menagerie erected by Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici in 1677 and dismantled by Grand Duke Peter Leopold Habsburg-Lorraine in 1776. The construction of the Lemon House became necessary as the collection of citrus trees expanded.
- The left side of the Lemon House was enlarged in 1816 by Giuseppe Cacialli to create a space equal in width to two windows. Cacialli also oversaw the construction of a small room on the same side, designed for use as a storage for material and equipment with an office annex for the Head Gardener (“Scrittoio del Giardiniere”). This room preserves the late eighteenth-century cabinets which were once used to display a collection of citrus casts. Cacialli was also entrusted with the Neoclassical design of the two wings’ façades, which form the edge of the garden to the right and left.
- The area below the Lemon House consists of a garden with four large flowerbeds designed for growing roses. Along the wall at the base, there are various parterres originally conceived to propagate plants. The garden is closed off by two high walls which line the boulevard.

December 1978, Armando’s Le Club, Acapulco, Mexico.
Nighttime at Acapulco’s sultriest disco. Revelry on the dance floor. In the heat of the moment, he smiles coyly and motions to the beach outside, hinting at a midnight swim. He unbuttons his shirt, flashing bronzed skin and the scent of his cologne, a virile muskiness loaded with patchouli, oakmoss and elegant woody notes. A masculine impression of a day under the sun, intensified by the thrill of the night.

- ÉL and Ella were inspired by the decadence and glamour of  Acapulco in the 70s. December in Acapulco was the obligatory stop in the jet set calendar, with lots of beach and pool time and endless partying. The 70s were an era of glamour and sensuality heightened in here by the heat, the magnificence of the bay and magical sunsets.

- With Él and Ella we were looking to create the impression of a scent macerating on skin, something more sensual and playful. The idea was to recreate the scent of HIM and HER just as they leave the disco, they come together and embrace…what would each smell like? HIM with his unbuttoned shirt and his burly scent, her with her plunging neckline and her voluptuous femininity. In ÉL and ELLA skin, sweat, cigarettes, champagne, sand and heat all come together under in a sophisticated way.
