This beautiful, antique mahogany and cane bergere swivel chair is a rare find. We created a custom loose zebra hide cushion and also reupholstered the magnificent arm rests in zebra. The chair bears the stamp of the maker, G. Jacob.
About Georges Jacob ~ "Despite his humble origins, Georges Jacob rose to become one of the most renowned menuisiers of his day. Unlike many artisans who joined their fathers or brothers in the middle-class family trade of furniture making, Jacob was from a peasant family and moved to Paris at sixteen to begin his career. He apprenticed in a joinery workshop and eventually became a master in 1765. He developed a reputation for producing inventive designs for chairs, beds, and screens carved with such motifs as twisted ribbons, guilloches, beading, and fluting. Jacob's reputation grew quickly, eventually spreading outside France; the future King George IV of England, Gustavus III of Sweden, and several German princes all ordered furniture from him. During the French Revolution, his debts mounted as several of his French clients fled the country or were executed. Despite his aristocratic business connections, which would have provoked suspicion from the revolutionary government, Jacob's friendship with the painter Jacques-Louis David helped him to avoid imprisonment, and he became one of the main suppliers of furniture to the revolutionary government and later to Emperor Napoleon. Jacob retired in 1796, turning his business over to his two sons. When the older son died, Jacob returned to work and watched the firm become one of the most important of the period, supplying pieces to many wealthy residences and employing more than three hundred workmen." ~ from the J. Circle Chairs In Zebra Hide, Pair

Description

This is an early edition Model B3 "Wassily" Chair from Berlin based manufacturer, Standard-Möbel. It exhibits the original black Eisengarn canvas. A truly iconic design, deserving to be in a museum.

The model for this chair is the traditional overstuffed club chair, but all that remains is its mere outline, an elegant composition traced in gleaming steel. The canvas seat, back, and arms seem to float in space; the body of the sitter does not touch the steel framework. Breuer spoke of the chair as his “most extreme work . . . the least artistic, the most logical, the least ‘cozy’ and the most mechanical.” It was also his most influential piece of design, taking furniture in a radical new direction. Breuer had designed an earlier version in 1925, while teaching at the Bauhaus, the influential German school of modern art, architecture, and design in Dessau, and within a year designers everywhere were experimenting with tubular steel. Breuer claimed to have drawn inspiration from the tubular-steel handlebars of his bicycle, which were strong, lightweight, and mass-produced. He reasoned that if the material could be bent into handlebars, it could be bent into forms for furniture.  The chair was dubbed the “Wassily” after the painter Vasily (or Wassily) Kandinsky, Breuer’s friend and fellow Bauhaus instructor, who had praised the design when it was first produced. - from MOMA.

Inspired by the frame of a bicycle and influenced by the constructivist theories of the De Stjil movement, Marcel Breuer was still an apprentice at the Bauhaus when he reduced the classic club chair to its elemental lines and planes, forever changing the course of furniture design. - from Knoll.

Overall in good condition. The tubular steel frame with scattered pitting, losses, and oxidation to the plating, consistent with the aging process of the material and with use over time. The fabric upholstery panels shows evidence of over-stretching and sagging consistent with age and use. Chair shows traces of surface dirt throughout consistent with age. With original Eisengarn and replaced canvas, as seen in the catalogue illustration. The original Eisengarn armrests show discoloration and fading, consistent with the natural aging process of the material. The canvas with wear and surface soiling consistent with use. The tubular steel frame with a slight seam separation in the metal construction to the center base rail.

We have an incredible collection of vintage chairs and design icons waiting for a new life. Our upcylced Womb Chairs are some of our most popular designs. This Womb Chair and Ottoman will be made to order with the finest Texas sheepskins. Please note, as each hide is unique, the finished chair will also be unique. Texas sheepskin is cozy like the inside of an Ugg boot and the underside of a Western saddle.

Bespoke Womb Chair And Ottoman In Texas Sheepskin

Wow. These chairs are extremely cool. A rare pair of Verner Panton lounges. Panton was passionate about the shapes you could make with plastic and creating futuristic forms. No doubt evident in these creatures. We restored the chairs in a splashy chic black and white Brazilian cowhide. Sleek black leather straps and buttons finish off the design. This is art.

Originally manufactured for a Christian Dior show in the 2000s, we came upon the set at a gallery and knew we had to grab it. We've never seen anything like it. Talk about POP! The shiny chrome plate perfectly frames each unique Lichtenstein style art piece over every surface. We reupholstered the loveseat and lounge chairs in a beautiful black Brazilian cowhide for ultra swagger. The black is simple but powerful against the art and chrome. Furniture is art and this is no exception. A one of a kind set for your one of a kind living room.

Our master upholsters went down to the bones of the chair, removing all old foam and replacing with new foam. You should see the video we took of the restoration process on this one. Ask us for details. Luxurious down feathers generously fill the back and seat cushions. Shown here in Smokey Taupe - a nice, neutral grey with infinite interior possibilities.
Trust us, it's the most comfortable chair to come out of our studio.

Bespoke Womb Chair And Ottoman In New Zealand Sheepskin

This iconic chair is part of the KULE x Forsyth collab. Introducing a collection of timeless design icons restored by Forsyth with fabric designed by KULE. The collection includes an Eero Saarinen Womb Chair, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Brno chairs, and a George Nelson bench, all restored in St. Louis with custom KULE fabric from a storied Italian mill.
A German born designer, Mies van der Rohe originally designed this chair for his renowned Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic.  It was later produced by Knoll.  The navy doppio stripe KULE-designed fabric melds perfectly with the lean profile and clean lines of Mies van der Rohe’s design.

The romance of rattan!  Homey, versatile, and always stylish. This chair and ottoman set is part of a 10-piece set but we have decided to sell the pieces separately. You can view the whole set at this link.
For the chair and ottoman, we created custom Brazilian cowhide cushions with 100% feather fill. To add an element of distinction and dare we say, Prep!, we piped the cushions in a Malibu blue leather. Blue and white and wicker. Ultra cool.

This is an original Forsyth design inspired by a 1970s chair we found in an antique shop in St. Louis. The original was from Italy. We had never seen anything like it!  The low profile, the beautiful curves, the leather detailing - it's a chair worth designing a room around. Introducing our 5501 Lounge Chair, what we lovingly refer to as Il Duomo chair. It is handcrafted in Saint Louis. The interior wooden frame is finished with foam cushioning to create the round shape and comfortable seat and upholstered in luxuriously soft cigar-hued leather.

Piero Lissoni is an Italian architect and designer well known for his wide and low contemporary furniture designs. We love this set! It's the perfect deep lounge for napping, reading, or just plain loungin. The original upholstery had contrasting colors on the seats and the sides. So, inspired by a Gabriela Hearst Fall-Winter 2020 look of a super soft grey cashmere turtleneck and an ultra cool black leather skirt, we chose a Loro Piana grey cashmere for the seats and a contrast of Loro Piana black leather for the sides. We love the contrast of color and texture. Forsyth is fashion. Luxury up-cycling at its finest.
