Semi emerged in 1968 from the creative partnership between Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup, as a corrective to the cliched cozy image of Nordic style. They wanted to create a lamp with sharply clean lines and, after recognition from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, it went on to become a Danish best-seller in the ‘80s. Curator's Notes

‘Kuro-Mura’ refers to the blackened version of Futagami ‘Ihada’ products. The black is achieved through a traditional method of applying a mixture of dark pigment and Japanese lacquer (urushi) onto the surface. The result is a saturated, textural colour.
Crafted entirely by hand at the renowned Futagami foundry in Takaoka city, these pendant shades hang gracefully with their unique geometric forms. The Hemisphere pendant features an Ihada brass interior and a blackened brass exterior. Includes pendant shade and canopy cup only.

Description

Tom Dixon says Etch was inspired by the logic of pure mathematics. Even without knowing that backstory, the striking geodesic form speaks volumes on its own. Composed of ultra-fine perforated metal sheets, the pendant light's angled surface casts atmospheric shadows. Tom borrows the industrial photo-etching process used to produce electronics to create the intricate patterns on the fixture's surface. Yet another example of the cleverly coherent design sense of this much-lauded British maestro.
