Description

Menu gives it a whirl. The Dancing Pendant for the Danish brand resembles nothing so much as the folds of a ballerina's twirling skirt. The designers at Iskos-Berlin certainly know how to "make" an entrance—or indeed any other room—with this oversize confection of a light. For the construction, they chose a pet material: PET felt, a recycled fabrication produced from discarded soft drink bottles. As to what gave them the inspiration? "We see design as an art of storytelling."

Inspired by this, Finnish design Ilmari Tapiovaara created a honeycomb structure composed of stacked metal discs. In 1955, when Alvar Aalto was the dominant figure of Helsinkis cultural life, Ilmari Tapiovaara presented himself as the first Finnish non-architect designer. An expert in chairs and furniture, he created his sole and unique household lamp: Maija.

Description

More than twice the size of the VP1, this pendant is exactly as its name states: big. Like its little sibling, the VP2 is made up of 2 semi-circular facing spheres—the upper sphere twice as large as the lower one. The late, great Verner Panton believed in the possibility of a happier, brighter future, and designed with this in mind. The visionary Dane was the first to do inflatable furniture, cardboard houses and single-form, injection-molded plastic chairs—and all with an optimistic nod. Those chairs appeared in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey; the same year experienced revolutions in the streets of Paris, Rome and the U.S. celebrating change by a generation fueled on Flower Power and a new outlook on the world. Verner marked it all the next year with the FlowerPot collection of table and pendant lights. Spherical, bold and modern, they are as fresh looking now as they were in 1969. No wonder Copenhagen house &Tradition decided to reissue them.

Design duo Iskos-Berlin went one better on their original inspiration for a hanging pendant based on the idea of a Chinese paper shade by exploring a 3D knitting technique to move away from the traditional rice paper and create a new kind of 360-degree lamp. Although centuries old, knitting easily lent itself to this latest high-tech iteration as the spherical shade distributes light evenly through the yarn's pattern, hiding the light source at the center in a cozy glow. The basic round version, available in 2 sizes, can be used alone or in clusters, either low over a table or hanging higher to light a room.

Moody Danish piers and the memory of maritime gas lamps silhouetted against an inky sky form the back-story behind the evocative shape of the Copenhagen Pendant Collection for &Tradition. A contemporary design by Denmark native Oliver Schick, this bell-shaped pendant is inspired by lamps from the 1970s. Its shade is made from hand-spun aluminum that has undergone a unique lacquering process, resulting in an almost ceramic-like, matte finish. SW4 is a small, more compact version of Blown, the pendant light with a unique textured surface created by London-based design star Samuel Wilkinson. In a choice of silver lustre or opal glass, he arrived at the exact form for the mouth-blown glass bubble by applying 3D software to chart the refraction of light within. Danish brand &Tradition's head Martin Kornbek Hansen says Blown "not only illuminates a room, it also transforms surroundings into art" with its patterned effects—more subtly glowing in the opal version or more enthrallingly intricate in the silvered. "Whether you choose to have one lamp or several together as a cluster, the effect is amazing both on and off," he adds.
