Description

British design star Tom Dixon turns the proverbial beat around with his Mirror Ball Pendant Light. Inspired by 1960s space helmets and the timeless disco icon, the fixture's dazzling reflections result from a remarkable process called vacuum metallization. Vaporizing a thin layer of pure metal onto the internal surface of a polycarbonate globe (via an electrical charge) creates the brilliant mirror finish. The metallic interior focuses the light and projects the warm illumination downward through the clear bottom of the globe. Curator's Notes

This pendant shade, part of designer Rina Ono’s lighting collection for Hayashi Kougei, is made from traditional Japanese washi paper. There are so many things to love about it! It’s incredibly well crafted – from the same area as most of our washi paper products in the Gifu prefecture – and it emits a very diffused light through the paper, giving everything around a soft glow. I was also drawn to the collection because of the exquisite forms the pendants are available in.

It was traditionally used for thatching and weaving, much like the coconut palm. Maija Puoskari Vanamo Pendant

Description

Marset's Pleat Box series, with model 24 the small-scale version, raids the digital toolbox for a design that's applied to one of the oldest heritage crafts—ceramics. A computer-generated fold in a piece of cloth becomes a striking creased ceramic shade, in a range of color options resulting from recycling different enamels. On the interior, a choice of either bright white or warm gold enamel creates a glittering effect. Pleat Box is also an exciting and first-ever union between between Xavier Mañosa, a master ceramicist from Barcelona, and the Mashallah design studio in Berlin with the Marset brand. And the Beat goes on-with the Beat Wide variation in British designer Tom Dixon's unique series of pendant lights. Originally conceived during a field trip to India with his Royal College of Art students, the shapes are based on traditional brass cooking pots and water vessels. Using the same time-honored techniques, the lamps are spun and hand-beaten by skilled craftsmen from Moradabad in Northern India. But the technology is pure 21st Century, utilizing an LED light source. The firm Tom Dixon, established in 2002 by the renowned designer and his partner David Begg, encompasses everything from chairs to fragrance as well as a deep dive into lighting. Tom has been recognized with OBE honors and his work sits in museums across the globe including London's Victoria and Albert, New York's Museum of Modern Art and Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou.

More than twice the size of the VP1, this pendant is exactly as its name states: big. Like its little sibling, the VP2 is made up of 2 semi-circular facing spheres—the upper sphere twice as large as the lower one. The late, great Verner Panton believed in the possibility of a happier, brighter future, and designed with this in mind. The visionary Dane was the first to do inflatable furniture, cardboard houses and single-form, injection-molded plastic chairs—and all with an optimistic nod. Those chairs appeared in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey; the same year experienced revolutions in the streets of Paris, Rome and the U.S. celebrating change by a generation fueled on Flower Power and a new outlook on the world. Verner marked it all the next year with the FlowerPot collection of table and pendant lights. Spherical, bold and modern, they are as fresh looking now as they were in 1969. No wonder Copenhagen house &Tradition decided to reissue them.

Bub Pendant

Description

Design duo Iskos-Berlin went one better on their original inspiration for a hanging pendant based on the idea of a Chinese paper shade by exploring a 3D knitting technique to move away from the traditional rice paper and create a new kind of 360-degree lamp. Although centuries old, knitting easily lent itself to this latest high-tech iteration as the spherical shade distributes light evenly through the yarn's pattern, hiding the light source at the center in a cozy glow. The basic round version, available in 2 sizes, can be used alone or in clusters, either low over a table or hanging higher to light a room.

Ella Pendant

Description

Moody Danish piers and the memory of maritime gas lamps silhouetted against an inky sky form the back-story behind the evocative shape of the Copenhagen Pendant Collection for &Tradition. A curving metal shade is secured to a cord with four arching plated steel tabs where it narrows at the top. The smallest version in the series, the SC6 is available in matte black, white or a selection of offbeat pastels in a lacquered finish, and is especially effective when deployed in multiples. Recalling the atmospheric effect of gaslight, the downward light is even and solid, while the subtle up-light is diffused. No mere exercise in nostalgia, the light is resolutely modern. Designer Space Copenhagen's founding partner Peter Bundgaard Rützou has aptly observed: "Our ambition was to design a pendant with a simple industrial feel, but which was still elegant and poetic."
