Photographer LaToya Ruby Frazier (born 1982) grew up in Braddock, PA, a borough in the American Rust Belt ravaged by the steel-industry crisis that hit the US during the Reagan administration. In this former bastion of the steel industry, the artist was raised in her Afro-American family, whose story she told in The Notion of Family . Her 2016 residency at Grand-Hornu allowed her to pursue her work on postindustrial society in Belgium, turning her camera to the Borinage, a mining region whose intense activity in the 19th century was diminished by a series of crises that led to the closure of the last mine in 1976. Testimonies gathered by Frazier from the former miners and their families have resulted in And from the Coaltips a Tree Will Rise , an extensive collection of portraits, landscapes and still lifes.

Presenting paintings of some of the artist's key models and muses, I Can't See You Without Me illuminates the work of Brooklyn painter Mickalene Thomas (born 1971). Culling from art history and popular culture, Thomas creates scintillating portraits that deconstruct the highly charged connections between sitter, artist and viewer. Whether depicted as classically composed 19th-century odalisques, Afro-adorned vixens of blaxploitation films or as a powerful maternal figure yearning for social mobility, the recurring models in Thomas' compositions (almost exclusively women of color) convey a spirit of strength and self-confidence. Across this archetypal array, it is both their contradictions and kinships that make the black female body such fertile terrain for the artist's ongoing investigations. By casting herself, her late mother and other formidable women in her life as models, muses and collaborators, Thomas particularizes her distinctive oeuvre of portraiture. Mickalene Thomas: I Can’t See You Without Me

This is the sixth volume in Karma’s 11-volume facsimile printing of Lee Lozano’s “Private Book” project. A prolific writer and documenter of both her art and her relationships, the public and private, the painter Lee Lozano (1930–99) kept a series of personal journals from 1968 to 1970 while living in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. In 1972 she rigorously edited these books, thus completing the project. Eleven of these private books survive, containing notes on her work, detailed interactions with artist friends and commentary on the alienations of gender politics, as well as philosophical queries into art’s role in society and humorous asides from daily life.

This book presents a screenplay for an installation of two 16mm films by Stan Douglas titled “Inconsolable Memories” as well as related essays and a series of photographs taken by Douglas as research for the project. The filmic installation revolves around a group of Cuban natives and moves fluidly through the cast of characters’ past and present memories. Overwhelmingly melancholic and majestic, the photographs taken by Douglas capture the slow architectural ruins of Cuba from a sweeping cinematic perspective. This book was published to coincide with the exhibition of “Inconsolable Memories” at the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Vancouver.

Stan Douglas Inconsolable Memories

Robert Heinecken (1931–2006) has been called one of America’s most influential contemporary, conceptual photographers, and yet he rarely used a camera. His definition of photography encompassed everything related to the photo; rather than focusing on the photographic image as a creation derived solely from a camera, his interest was on the relation of methods and formalism – often in an irreverent and humorous way – to popular media.
This first large-scale monograph presents an overview of Heinecken’s work from the 1960–90s, highlighting his exploration of the material possibilities of the medium, and how he created new methods to record and produce photographic objects using collage, lithography, Polaroid, silver gelatin prints, color processes, digital prints and experimental uses of darkroom chemistry.

Southern California–based painter Jonas Wood (b. 1977) depicts everyday scenes in a colorful, graphic style that references modernist and Pop aesthetics while remaining unquestionably contemporary. Jonas Wood

Aftermath is collection of photographs of all the inanimate objects in the Saloon, a shooting location for Paul McCarthy’s film DADDA Saloon. The photographs were taken after the shoot was finished, leaving various tableaus that suggest the actions and content of the film. Photographed as a document, the props and the set now create their own resonance after their role in the film has ended.

Paul Mccarthy / Damon Mccarthy: Aftermath

"For over five decades, my most powerful and intense relationship has been with my work. As a graduate student at Yale in the '60s, I began to use the phallus as a metaphor for feminism and male posturing. At the time, Yale was an all-male undergraduate program. I became fascinated with explicit graffiti that I discovered in men's bathrooms, finding inspiration in raw humor and unedited scrawls. Aggression and humor are strongly connected in my work. This is epitomized in my piece "Supercock" (1966), a drawing of a comic superhero with huge genitals ejaculating through the world; and in "Fun-Gun" (1967), an anatomical drawing of a phallus shooting collaged live ammo. My "Fuck Vietnam" series was just the start. Graffiti influences can be traced throughout my entire body of work and in my scatological titles such as "Dicks of Death" (2015). I confront war with very graphic, in-your-face words and images. Stuffed phalluses, blood and semen juxtapose national imagery and the US flag. It's funny but it's dead serious! Charcoal is my favorite medium. Over the span of my career, the experience of working with charcoal has been extremely dynamic, raw and personal. There's a gritty and visceral quality to these political drawings. The charcoal works represent an amalgamation of anti-war, feminism and sexuality. Beyond these themes, my work delves into the multiple layers of the human psyche. The work in Belvedere focuses on the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, originators of the Overton window, a policy framing device used to adjust public opinion on a particular subject by positing radical viewpoints and thereby shifting the frame of reference closer to an intended outcome.

Soul Of A Nation Reader: Writings By And About Black American Artists, 1960-1080

On Onions is a photographic study of onions by Israeli-born artist Elad Lassry (born 1977). Characteristically highlighting the spectrum of hues and shapes for the vegetable, Lassry’s selected taxonomy includes sections on red, yellow and white onions, each of which possesses its own distinct taste and benefits. On Onions is Lassry’s first artist’s book, and the work will exist only in book form; it is at once wry, refreshing and disorienting in its biology workbook style, which makes fruitful use of “the confusion that results when there is something just slightly wrong in a photograph” (as the artist has described his practice in general). Composed by the artist and arranged by Stuart Bailey, the book includes an essay written by Angie Keefer about the effects of sliced onions on human tear ducts.

Jasper Johns Vs Brian Ramnarine is a facsimile publication that includes falsified correspondence between bronze manufacturer Brian Ramnarine and Johns, created by the former, as well as evidence used by the United States Government to convict Ramnarine of forgery. The document outlines fake letters of authenticity, forged correspondence from Johns, and images of the artist’s work that Ramnarine wrongfully produced and sold. Ramnarine was convinced and jailed in 2014 by the United States Government. This publication is in the collection of the New York Public Library and the Whitney Museum.

Jasper Johns Vs Brian Ramnarine
