Canton 1 Light Pendant

Description

Marset's Pleat Box series, with model 13 a mini version, raids the digital toolbox for a design that's applied to one of the oldest heritage crafts—ceramics. A computer-generated fold in a piece of cloth becomes a striking creased ceramic shade, in a range of color options resulting from recycling different enamels. On the interior, a choice of either bright white or warm gold enamel creates a glittering effect. Pleat Box is also an exciting and first-ever union between between Xavier Mañosa, a master ceramicist from Barcelona, and the Mashallah design studio in Berlin with the Marset brand. Xavier's detour as an industrial designer informs his bold shapes while Mashallah, the brainchild of Hande Ak ç ayli and Murat Ko ç yigit, is right at the intersection of art and technology.

Recalling traditional lanterns found on those crafts, the project's designers from Sputnik Estudio, a multidisciplinary design lab in Valencia, devised fixtures that are completely customizable. Decide how many shades to place on the blown-glass diffuser, and in what order and position. Shades can be placed facing up or down, for reflected or direct lighting. Eye-catching on its own or striking hung in a group. And, with a range of accessory fittings, the pendant can also be arrayed in multiples like a garland or adapted as a wall fixture or floor lamp.

Glendale 9 Light Pendant Aged Brass

Description

Beat Fat is the filled-out version of British designer Tom Dixon's unique series of pendant lights. Originally conceived during a field trip to India with his Royal College of Art students, the shapes are based on traditional brass cooking pots and water vessels. Using the same time-honored techniques, the lamps are spun and hand-beaten by skilled craftsmen from Moradabad in Northern India. But the technology is pure 21st Century, utilizing an LED light source. The firm Tom Dixon, established in 2002 by the renowned designer and his partner David Begg, encompasses everything from chairs to fragrance as well as a deep dive into lighting. Tom has been recognized with OBE honors and his work sits in museums across the globe including London's Victoria and Albert, New York's Museum of Modern Art and Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou.

Curator's Notes

This pendant shade, part of designer Rina Ono’s lighting collection for Hayashi Kougei, is made from traditional Japanese washi paper. There are so many things to love about it! It’s incredibly well crafted – from the same area as most of our washi paper products in the Gifu prefecture – and it emits a very diffused light through the paper, giving everything around a soft glow. I was also drawn to the collection because of the exquisite forms the pendants are available in.

Nelson was inspired by a set of silk-covered Swedish hanging lamps that he wanted to acquire for his office, but he found the price to be prohibitive. An ingenious and resourceful designer, he went on to create the first set of Bubble Lamps using a translucent white plastic spray. Nelson drew from elemental, organic shapes in making variations including sconces, table lamps and floor lamps.

Pendants include a brushed, nickel-plated steel ceiling plate measuring 5.25" and a 6-foot cord. Product is UL-listed and rated for bulbs up to 150 watts. Bulb is not included.

Nelson™ Pear Bubble Pendant

The Leonard Chandelier, designed by Søren Rose, is inspired by the New York City glamor of the late 1930s. A part of Menu's Tribeca lighting series, the Leonard was born when Rose traveled across the United States in search of beautiful old lamps. When he returned to his base in New York, he took the pieces apart and reassembled as he saw fit. In this way, the Leonard melds modern aesthetics with the warmth of vintage pieces.

Arms and connection parts are made from solid brass or powder coated steel rod. The socket is painted ceramic. The brass is not lacquered so the metal will darken and patinate over time. Cord measures 196.9". Bulbs not included.

Leonard Chandelier

Description

The first lamp New Zealand designer David Trubridge ever made in 1995 was shaped like a hinaki, the eel traps the Maori make from woven vines. The elongated form of the Hinaki Pendant Light equally captures attention in a foyer or room. A passion for the environment and earth drives the construction of all David's work, primarily made of renewable bamboo and flat-packed to reduce freighting and packaging resources and the identical pieces make home assembly a snap, literally. Endlessly adaptable, the light is available in 2 sizes and 9 stock colors (custom colors upon request) in natural or painted bamboo with nylon clip fasteners. The celebrated designing craftsman ended up in his adopted home of New Zealand after he, his wife and their two sons sold everything and set off on a yacht for a world adventure. It culminated in 1985 when they decided to remain there. While an artist-in-residence, he built a house and suddenly found himself with further commissions. Before realizing homes, lamps and furniture, David left Newcastle University in 1972 with a degree in Naval architecture. His work has appeared in countless museums, including the Victoria & Albert and the Pompidou Centre. That barely scratches the surface of his fascinating story and work ethos.
